How does online play happen

Hi,
Total newbie on online play.
In SP in year 2005 i had lvl 90 FO + FW Sorc.

Now when ladder starts i`m thinking about Sorc FO+Hydra or Trapsin.

But how does all that online play work? Are there public places i join? Or there are private games to join?

In ladder i can also play solo?

Don`t understand any of this

You make online characters and play with them, you can make own games, private with password or public, you can invite friends to them too.Ladder characters will be separated from nonladder, after season end, everything season become non seasonal.

if you want to compete in the race, become a content creator and have enough fans to feed you xp and items all day otherwise ignore that part of it.

For normal characters i would suggest joining public games for quets/leveling and then farming in solo games for items.

yes their is a “lobby” with a list of games you can join (or at least attempt too).

yes they are games with passwords you can’t see them on a list but if you join a discord you can find people who run private games pretty easy.

yes you can make a game with a password and just not tell anyone about it (though someone could guess at the name and pass so don’t make it too obvious if you don’t want to risk it)

There is no competition. You cannot realistically reach level 99 in 4 months unless you are a bot.

You can also hit the “play” button and get an auto-generated GameXXXXXXXXXXXXXX name and password to play solo/private with an online character. If you have “friends join” enabled in settings people on your friends list can join it automatically though, so if you want it truly private you’ll have to uncheck that box (also true for creating PW game in lobby).

There is an online lobby listing of public games you can join. Nearly identical to the old lobby system if you played on online back then.

why not just try it out before the ladder starts?

you absolutely can, but yes the bots will win the race. I was just talking about the race among humans though.

yeah i still consider that making a game with a password but i should have also explicitly mentioned the button i guess

Yeah I meant it as extra info for the OP since they seemed very new to how it all works, but I definitely didn’t mean to suggest that you were in any way wrong, just wanted to explicitly go through the multiple steps of how to do it for OP!
