How does magic damage reduction really work?

Yes I searched on the internet but I got more confused. Many items have ‘Magic Damage Reduced By x’. The point is that x is an integer number and not a percentage like resistences. Does it mean that literally the amount of damage shown is reduced?

For example if a magic attack from an obliviom knight (the white bolt) would reduce my health by 50 and I have an item with ‘magic damage reduced by 5’, then I would only lose 45 life? It’s that simple and I’ve been a noob this whole time?

I’m asking because I’m looking to complete Natalya’s set and the set has a big magic damage reduction, but I don’t know in practice how this reduction works.

Mdr/Dr best for 95% ES Sorcs. You can make a pretty much invincible tank.

Yeah, until you get mana burned, then trip over a leaf and die. :stuck_out_tongue:

i tried it in hc for a bit but as DJ says, mana burn makes it kind of sketch… since you know, it’s still a broken mechanic.

Sorc after she gets manaburned:

thanks

Some websites say that mdr also reduces elemental damage. does it proceed? I thought the elemental damage reduction only applies to resistances

Oh yes, elemental damage is also reduced. It doesn’t just apply to magic damage itself. Thank you again
