How does ladder work in Diablo 2?

I had questions about how the ladder system works in this game. I am confused in some aspects and would like clarification.

  1. When I create a ladder character, and the ladder resets, does the character become a non-ladder character or do I lose that character permanently and must start over? If the character does remain, do I keep all available items to be used for non-ladder characters?

  2. Is the objective of the ladder to reach level 99 the fastest way possible?

  3. When the ladder resets, does this mean that everyone is now at a completely even footing with a new economy?

Characters become non-ladder and you keep them.
Items in their inventories stay there.
Items in your stash are placed in a stash tab that will remain for a while, can only take things out and not put things in, you should empty it and store the items elsewhere.

For some, others just like the fresh start or the fresh economy.
Just do what you like.

Could you clarify point 2 for me, please? What determines where you place in the ladder rankings? That’s why I was curious if your level is what determined this, but I wanted clarification on how the ladder worked.

I’m a casual player and not very good, but I understand that some players play excellently. An example would be old-school Mario games where players would speed run levels and be very particular in their movements.

Is speed running to max level what determines rank 1 in the Diablo 2 ladder, and if it is not, what is?

The idea of a fresh economy sounds awesome, and I am looking forward to playing ladder when it comes out.

Yes the first one to 99 places first, but the only way to get there is if you have 7 other players helping you 24/7.

How does Ladder work in D2R? It goes like this, you recruit 100 or so loyal star struck followers on your 3rd party website of choice. Then you get them to give you all the decent drops and runes from forge so you have nigma day 1. Next, you get them to clear chaos sanctuary but not kill Diablo. Then you rapidly join a game to smash big d every 30 seconds or so untill you reach lvl 99. If you are not a no lifer then well, you got no chance. Exploiting the game is not exploiting according to Blizzard so have at cheating the system!
