Hi, my nephew is coming over next weekend and I want us to try a mod with extra runewords, improved drop rates, and more stash space, but I can’t seem to find how to connect with him over lan. What is the procedure to play together? Do we need to go over battle net after installing the mod?

If you are talking about D2R, the TCP/IP connectivity (LAN) was removed.
So BNET is the only option. But AFAIK using mods on BNET isn’t taken kindly by Blizzard.

Yes. I’d recommend to PW protect your game, so no one else can join. As already said, use mods on BNET AT YOUR OWN risk. Using mods on BNET might get you banned. Situation is still AFAIK unclear. You can google about the topic.
You mean that people without the mod could join? That seems weird considering that some of those moded runewords don’t exist in the regular game.
As for getting potentially getting banned, what is the official way to play mods with your friend to avoid getting banned?
There are no online mods for d2r. Only offline mods exist. And offline mods you can’t play with other players.
