Help with Hell difficulty

Got to hell for the first time last night. been a long time since i played this game and frankly i dont remember getting there nearly 2 decades ago when i played last. but this is impossible. I know im just “good gear” away from feeling somewhat relevant in this difficulty, but i simply cant progress like this. im not getting any good drops in act 1, and i dont dare traverse anything in act 2.

I can halfway sustain as a cold/fire sorc but my merc is plain out useless. if he goes toe to toe with more than 1 or 2 mobs hes tanking the floor in short order. act 2 he cant even 1v1. his gear doesnt seem “terrible” but i know it needs significant improvement. but i just cant get anything to drop. meanwhile im blowing hundreds of thousands of gold in a few hours reviving him for the times i wasnt able to yoink him out of combat in time with teleport.

what the hell am i supposed to do to gear up for this? nightmare gear drops but its all crap compared to what i have.

Suggestion, go back and farm NM TZ’s for gear.

by that i believe you are referring to terror zones. wasnt aware they even existed in nm. arent those new to the remaster? how did people get through hell before the remaster?

Just keep killing. Runewords are generally the easiest upgrades to make. Get your merc an insight polearm and smoke armour. See what else isn’t too hard to make but you will need to either do NM or Hell to get the runes.

Uniques will come but it’s much easier to make something in general. Otherwise it’s picking a spot you can kill semi efficiently and patience.

Look at uniques and runewords you want and aim for them. You won’t get everything you want but over time you should be able to mix and match a usable build, using subpar unqiues as place holders.

Look into what sunder charms are and how TZs work. They can allow singular element builds and you can focus the damage.

The question isn’t a small answer, lots to unpack but the main thing is to kill as fast as possible and hope you find some items to start putting things together.

yea ive been looking at making a fortitude. i need a couple runes. lo and sol. the base i have isnt too bad. i have an insight polearm but its damage is kind of crap and i cant seem to find one thats much better, which is part of the problem. i think with the fortitude he will have a better chance at survival. but i also want to get him a better weapon to add lifesteal. the only thing hes rocking currently thats got lifesteal is the helm, for a total of like 5% iirc. i need those runes. but cant get em to drop.

i do know what sunder is. but you have to farm hell TZs. and i can barely get through act 1 on hell without TZ. not exactly an option.

Forget about Fortitude, you won’t get Lo for a while.

Plan on running Smoke runeword on yourself and possibly also your merc or a while, unless you have a unique or rare armor that is better.

The main thing is, you may well need to farm Nightmare for a while first. You can often get to Hell in your 50s or low 60s. But you can farm Nightmare Chaos Sanctuary and The World Keep into your high 60s or low 70s. This can be worth it if you are doing solo-self found, which you really should your first time through IMO.

Don’t worry about Sunder Charms. They won’t be worth it until you get much better gear and you can’t use them until level 75 anyway and as you say you have to defeat Hell before you can farm for Sunders anyhow.

You are better off sticking with Cold+Fire hybrid. I’m not sure how you speced it, but I leveled with Frozen Orb and Hydra and that was pretty effective and safe.

For your merc, an armor like Goldskin can be good for a while. Another good armor can be the set item Griswold’s Heart, which has three sockets you can put low level runes in to get better resistance (usually Lightning, Fire and Poison). Both should be upgraded. The runewords Treachery or Lionheart can also be good, though they are harder to make than Smoke. Even better are Shafstop or Guardian Angel, but only when paired with a helmet that provides additional resist all (since they provide no resist themselves).

Any armor for your merc that has base armor in the 400 range would be good at this level, then when you make the runeword it will imrpove. With +defense you shoudl be look at defense in the 1000+ range for the merc.

Also, since you are a Sorceress, you have to keep teleporting away to pull you merc out of trouble so he won’t die so much, and also keep feeding him potions, which you can do by using Shift+number, i.e. Shift+1 to give him a potion for you #1 belt position. You find lots of potions, so don’t be stingy.

Are you using Instant Cast? I highly recommend instant cast. My setup for Cold+Fire Sorc is something like:

Frozen Orb on Left click, Hydra on Right Click, Teleport mapped to Z, Static Field mapped to X.

Hold Shift + Left click to cast Frozen Orb at will, use Z to teleport around, drop hydras whenever. Rotate Orb>Hydra>Orb>Hydra, etc. teleport and run away. Teleport a lot to keep merc out of trouble.

For your gear, ideally you can find Tal Rasha’s set, but don’t count on getting all of the pieces before going to Hell. It won’t be worth using until you can get at least 3 pieces. The head piece is good by itself for your merc.

You can farm for Tal Rasha’s in NM Act 2 by running Canyon of the Magi and going to all the tombs and killing Duriel, but it may not be worth it, you may be better just running Diablo and Baal.

As a Sorc you don’t need “defense”, i.e. armor rating. You should probably just stick with Smoke until you can get Tal Rasha’s or something like Skin of the Vipermagi. Also look for Charms that give resistances, you’ll need those in Hell. Don’t worry about upgrading Skin of the Vipermagi, its not worth it for a Sorc.

For your merc he’ll need both defense and resistance. He’ll need armors with 30+ Resist all until you can get good head pieces with resist all. Ideally in Hell he’ll have either Treachery or armor with 1000+ defense. Good NM level armors, like Duriel’s Shell or Shafstop can be worth upgrading for your merc, but be careful to check the upgraded requirements and that he’ll meet them.

Once in Hell, I recommend running the Forgotten Tower over and over until level like 75-80 if you are struggling. Use Magic Find gear and see what you can get while getting runes from the Countess to upgrade. I got a nice Skin of the Vipermagi in the tower and got 2 pieces of Tal Rasha’s there by running it with MF gear while in my 60s-70s.

If you get Skin of the Vipermagi with at least 30 resist all, then I’d socket it and put an Um rune in it when you can find one. That will give you 45+ resist all. If less than 30, then I wouldn’t waste a socket on it.

If you get Venom Ward (pretty common), that can be worth upgrading as well for your merc to run Andriel over and over to farm her in NM and/or Hell. She’s an easy kill with Cold and Fire.

Don’t forget about Crafted items. Save those blues and make Caster gear. Keep all of the gems you find and when you farm the Countess you’ll get lots of low level runes and you’ll find blues along the way. Keep rolling Caster gear for any pieces that you don’t have good upgrades for. Don’t worry about the level of the base, since defense is meaningless for a Sorceress in PvM (don’t get hit).

Let’s talk shields. You can find White Monarch shields in Hell Act 1, but they aren’t as common as they will eb in Act 2+. Still get a Monarch ASAP and socket it to make Spirit. Until then, run Rhyme or Splendor. If you are in NM then you can focus more on Magic Find and may not need the resistances. So you can use options with faster cast and faster block. In Hell you’ll probably need resistances on your shield.

For weapon I assume you are using a Spirit Sword. If not then that’s an obvious upgrade. Spirit Sword will be your best option for a while, until you can get full Tal Rasha’s or Heart of the Oak. Technically its possible to find The Oculus in NM, but don’t count on it, lol!

As for Amulets and Rings. Keep every one you find. Either make Caster items from them or re-roll them in the Cube.

Oh, and to kill the Countess here are some tips. She is immune to Cold and Fire, so you can’t kill her directly. Hopefully you have Hydra. Fill her room with Hydras to kill all her minions. May need to throw Orbs in there too to clear trash. Then teleport in on top of her to have your merc attack her while you back off and cast Static Field. She’ll drop quickly if your merc has a half decent weapon.

Sorc is among easiest to finish hell by yourself…I started this season with just a blizz sorc, was very simple to clear all 3 difficulties and start farming to gear up my next chars…

Hope you’ve created at least spirit weap + monarch & smoke for yourself along with creating insight multiple times for your merc as you find nicer and nicer bases, along with bulwark + either hustle or treachery depending on your luck with rune drops… fortitude is stupid, good luck trying to get Lo that early… you’re going to be wasting a lot of time for something very unnecessary. On the other hand, the runewords I went over are all very cheap to make, most of those runes should drop frequently throughout the game while Ko/Lum/Lem/Io should drop occasionally.

Hell is difficult but in annoying way because of immunities. Pro speedrunner can finish it using cheesy tactics in few hours also it’s a lot easier with someone in party but average solo player has a hard time.

Static + merc or skipping them are not cheesy tactics

I’d argue that skipping whole maps of monsters is against rpg idea and not intended gameplay.

But again, Sorcs have alternative ways to kill but this is about speed…if you need complete immersion in your 20+ year old arpg then you do you…but speedrunners skip plenty of areas, so as a solo player skipping some immunes is so negligible… go get your sunder and then you can go back and kill coldworm, fangskin, etc for their godly magic morning star drops

i appreciate the response. lots of useful info here. allow me to breakdown some of what im using cuz a lot of where ive been going with the build matches this

sorc gear:

skin of viper magi - upgraded once, only 20 all res though
weapon is a jareds stone with +1 to skills. FCR, life and mana
Shield is a wall of the eyeless, upgraded once
gloves and boots have okay res and some FRW but nothing special. same for belt.
helm is Lore runeword

Merc was using insight pole but only had like 68 max damage so swapped to an upgraded battlebranch with 246 max damage.
hes running a stealth on a 130 def gothic armor, cuz thats the best ive found so far for him
helm is a 230 def stealskull. More IAS, leech and FHR.

his body armor absolutely needs changed but was afraid to until i found something amazing cuz the FHR on it is pretty good and i know he needs that.

As for my skills, im running frozen orb with meteor and fireball as secondaries. was curious about hydra but it seemed too “afk” to actually be powerful. unfortunately im all out of respecs so idk how id test that out lol but maybe ill shell out for a token one of these days. really, really wish they fixed the respec system to give ppl more freedom here. ive been “ssf” this whole time but still playing in online mode, mostly so i can go to other ppls games to help them out when i get bored in my own world.

i did manage to get into act 2 yesterday somewhat comfortably, but i attribute that mostly to leveling up lol i think im level 74 now, and thus so is my merc. when i first got to hell i was only lvl 62 and man that was rough. still not “easy” but certainly feel stronger. no gear upgrades though.

Find 4 os sword, make spirit, find 0 os monarch and use larzuk to make 4 os and create another spirit. Find best 4 or 5 os elite polearm especially if eth and make another insight or make obedience… your merc can also use bulwark + hustle/treachery. These are all very easy runewords to make that will easily make you and your merc much stronger…

You can also try your hand at creating blood ring/ammy & caster ammy/belt/boots, might get lucky especially with + skills on ammy…

Also currently hydra is on par with blizz and meteorb builds, they are top 3 self leveling sorc builds and argualy amongst all chars… I did hydra as my first char last season, very easy…

yeah i been tryin to find a monarch but no dice so far. typically i try to go through stuff like this on my own theory crafting. dont like using builds. and was doing great until i hit hell, when as a pure cold sorc i simply couldnt kill anything lol. i knew i had to dual spec something but wasnt sure what, since points are so limited and i only had 1 respec left. was kinda forced to, unfortunately.

my amulet is actually pretty decent. +1 to sorc skills, all res +14 and +9 life. i dont know if/when ill find better than that honestly. ill look into making a spirit sword and try to get a monarch as well. working on a decent smoke base as we speak.

edit: i just found an ethereal colossus vulge with no sockets on it. its tempting. but he cant use it with his current str.

I agree with you, while being an experienced player that Sorc can be one of the easiest to finish Hell. However, in the context of the OP, this is such bad mis-information. The OP has never cleared Hell before, so acting like they’re going to know the right kinds of tactics to do so on a Sorc and saying it’s easy comparing to your experience of doing this probably many, many times is not good advice.

I would say farm Nightmare terror zones. If you can manage some of Hell, you can try the Mausoleum next to Blood Raven in the Burial Grounds in Act 1. If you can reach Act 2, hit the Ancient Tunnels. But I feel NM Terror Zones are going to net better results.

i ran a few hours of terror zones last night. i found some decent sale items but nothing usable really. i think i found my 4 slot armor there but im not certain. but that was it if anything.

ill definitely keep pounding it though. the only thing that makes me reluctant is the knowledge that all the good stuff comes from hell mode. things drop there that cant even drop other places. like shakos and whatnot, from what i understand. not to mention the higher quality bases like monarch.

edit: made it to act 3. no new gear drops to speak of. did get an iron pelt armor for the merc, which seems to help a little but hes still pretty squish. but at least im making progress. and im actually surprised i made it past duriel, especially without losing my merc. cost me 5 full rejuvs but he went down quick. and hes usually my biggest road block in any run.

I have a FO/FB/Meteor sorceress that is now playing in Hell’s terror zones. When my sorc went through hell, some 3 socket helms in Act 2 dropped into which I made the rune words Ground and Temper since I lacked perfect res at the time. Plus I knew I would be farming meph which means sometimes there are legions of blood lords casting fire wall and fire ball in durance 3. Ground comes in handy for gloams in Act 3 Marsh, Act 4 Plains of Despair, the Icy Cellar, and WS 2 and sometimes WSK. Between acts 1-3, you will have a good base to find useful gear. I love the ancients tunnels-found my first cham there 2 ladders ago, the stony temple, countess-a cham dropped on the way to her, pit, the temples in Kurast, et al. I echo those who have suggested making the spirit combo until you find better. Our characters are always works in progress.

I’ve been muddling through. I’m to the bazaar in a3 currently. Jesus Christ I never would have thought the flayers would be so nasty. And the gloams! Never even posed a threat before and I died like 6x back to back trying to get to my corpse. And I’ve got like 62% light res. Lost almost a mil in gold between deaths and reviving my Merc. By the time I got to flayer dungeon I was so traumatized it took me the better part of an hour to clear it cuz of how cautious I was with every corner I turned lol

But I did manage to make a really nice treachery on chaos armor for my Merc. And that’s been helping. Now I need to get him a really good weapon. And my character is so squish it’s unreal. If I do get hit, it doesn’t take much. Tried messing with energy shield but Im not specced into it enough so one or two hits wipes my globe. At this point I think it’s going to be best to just focus on getting the Merc immortal and focusing on tele stomping him to tank everything. One day I’ll get good enough gear to get back in the fray but right now I’m just too frail. Might try an a5 Merc once I find a good set of 1h weps with good life steal on em.

By far Orb/Hydra works the best. Being able to cast the Hydras up ahead of you and around corners is a big increase for survivability. I don’t think I died a single time going through Hell last time as Orb/Hydra.

Your sorc should be around lvl75 if you want to feel even “somewhat safe” in hell. Some tips you can use for teleporting through the acts are to stack high Lightning resists. You should focus solely on Lightning and fire resistance for your play through more than cold and poison. The next most important thing for hell difficulty on a sorc is to have a little bit of damage reduction.

You can get 10-15% easily from items such as the Bulwark runeword, string of ears, or rock stopper helm. This will help keep you alive. As for your merc you have to give him the same tools until you get better alternatives.
