I know you gotta choose axe, sword, etc in your talents to get max dps. I find this rather annoying, essentially being locked into a specific weapon class to be at max effectiveness. WoW improved upon this by giving the warrior class (actually all classes) the ability to master multiple weapon types at one time. It would be nice if D2 was like this as well.
This kind of change has been implemented in some mods of D2 which i think is a good idea, so that you can wield 2 different weapons and not lose dps but I don’t think it is part of 2.4.
The blizz staff said that they want to hear feedback from ptr to determine which changes are good and what needs tweaking. Maybe make a post in there or something, I have no idea where the best place to post ideas is
You CAN “master multiple weapons.” Nothing prevents you from putting points into 2 masteries. Except obviously the skill point cost and sacrifice in other areas. But in one situation it can be justified. If you have one weapon which does the bulk of your damage, while the other does less damage but has an important proc or other property. You can max out mastery for the weapon that does most of your damage, and just put 1 point in on the other mastery, which you’ll get gear bonuses on top of.
Overall I think the system works pretty well by forcing you to make choices.
Plus the first point gets you a really big Critical Strike chance for the first point then the next points raise it a lot slower.
That said the damage/AR buffs being re-scaled might make it seem like less of a waste to use points in both, or some amount of consolidation might be nice, like 1h melee, 2h melee and throw, but that might be too big of a change for D2R vs. a new game like D4.
