Ive been a hardcore player since what…2001 2002 ish. When I play softcore games and see the long list of games vs hardcore its kinda discouraging, I love the challenge of HC mode and the bragging rights of how high we got. Findign items etc playing feels more defensive kinda. I wish there was a way to promote hardcore mode more.
What do you guys like and prefer? what were your challenges you over came?!
Workaround: You could always play softcore for the benefit of having more players to interact with, but if you die for any reason, you must immediately delete your character.
Personally, I am an item hoarder, so HC never interested me. If there was a HC option that moved me from HC to SC upon death, and I lost the titles on the character that are for HC, I would be interested. But I care to much for my loot to ever play HC for more then a rofl session with a friend.
Hardcore gives you an adrenaline rush any time you get into a dicey situation. The people are nicer, and play more intelligently, because they have to. The first time you trust a stranger enough to give loot privileges. Actual danger from PKs – was only killed by one once back in the day (level 15), and watching noobs get suckered by them. Actual sadness when you lose a high level character. So many reasons it’s better – yeah I wish more people played…
I think to encourage HC play, they could increase drop rates in that mode?
I prefer HC mode but I do play both now with console being an option:
On my PC, on SP (simply because of the reasons for SC) I only play HC. I prefer the finality of death, the fact it makes you always care about what is going on, and it forces you to play smarter. I also don’t “tone down” difficulty while playing HC. My characters usually play Normal and NM on ./players5 with certain builds playing higher and others lower and do not tone down Hell - I tend to play where there is a challenge. Only thing HC does impact is that I do not farm Meph w/o teleport due to the dolls.
I do play SC some now because I can play on my PS5, Switch, and PC depending on location. So travel is Switch (assuming good enough internet) and at home I can choose if I want the couch or PC. I never played D2 on SC since launch but that convenience did get me to play SC now
It’d make some sense as well just due to items leaving the economy on death. I honestly; however, don’t think you could noticeably increase HC participation because it only interests a certain type/mindset of a player who is okay with losing XXX hours of playtime.
Edit: @OP As for biggest hurdle/accomplishment either of the ones that come to mind would be for D2 (not D2R). Level 99 (Necro) or PKKing (also Necro, but different one)
And that’s a lie. At least if you look at any forum and the self claimed hardcore players.
Wouldn’t change much. There is nearly no pvp. Jugging rejuvs is not pvp.
Also most people want to play without a care and see pub games. Hardcore is a private community thing nowadays. Community changed a lot and people are more talk than action.
I played a lot hc back in classic and LoD, but I don’t see a reason going back there in d2r
Most people are very friendly and helpful in HC. Speaking as one such person, and I’ve had many very positive experiences with others in walking act1-5 games. I myself have probably rushed about 50 players eho were stuck on act 2 or ancients, or challenged with immunities. PKers and hot TPs are not the norm but the exception at less than 1%.
I like HC. The true HC. It means that when I die, even when it’s a DC (which is the case most of the time), I loose everything.
But most HC players don’t agree with that. They cheat. Most HC players have more than 1 account so not only can they have a BO barb so they are extra safe while farming, but they also can loot all their gear over their dead corpse if they die.
According to hardcore players (I even asked to DarkHumility who answered me the same on stream), it’s totally legit to cheat like that.
KEKW Rofl Lmao.
The true HC experience only exists for the naive players who know nothing about what really happens in HC and play the game how it was intended to be played.
I like both because HC actually makes PvM interesting and I like joining PvP leagues on SC. Sure public SC pop far outnumbers public HC but there are so many HC discord groups and d2jsp if you need trades or to find people to play with.
There are trolls and trolls. Some of the trolls are on Blizzard’s support, some on their management. Some people think abusive features are a good idea and “go with the setting”, such as also allowing people to ruin public games by going hostile. It’s not logical, though.
So here is what I propose: tell people NOT to play your hardcore mode because it is not functional.
What would be a correct fix, considering possible if near unattainable 3rd party disconnect software: give a 1 second cooldown before taking the character out in online games. This would be consistent with someone rather slow hitting Esc + Save and Exit.
At any sign of disconnect OR LAG, act upon it and remove the character from the game with a 1 second cooldown.
Fortunately for me I lost the character at level 26 and learned my lesson == that HC play is not implemented correctly == . There are so many others that realized this at level 90 and Blizzard agents insist that they won’t fix it because it’s as it should be - except it’s not and they are trolls just like there are trolls everywhere in life.
Do you get random shifts on the chess board? Or it is called cheating.
