Hammerdin help please

I have a level 80 Hammerdin with Blessed Hammer and all synergies at 20 plus Holy Shield at 20. I don’t know where to put skill points now going forward. I did put some in Smite but I think that’s a mistake. Should I just keep adding to Blessed Hammer to go well beyond 20 pts or start getting Lightening Resist built up. Thanks from an older gamer still learning.

I’m 85 ATM and my tree is as follows.

+1 Holy Bolt
+20 Blessed Hammer
+1 Smite
+1 Charge
+1 Holy shield
+1 Might
+20 Blessed Aim
+20 Concentration
+1 Prayer
+1 Cleansing
+1 Defiance
+20 Vigor

Then I added a couple in others just to have them avaliable if I wanted to use that aura for something specific but I’m sure what would be the best to just funnel them into Holy sheild instead putting it at or near max and that would finish it off at 99.

When you say level it well past 20 your referring to its level with item buffs correct? If the numbers blue it’s being modified by gear so you want to make sure you level it to its base max of 20.

Yes thank you so much. I have BH at base level 20 and all synergies at base 20, same with Holy Shield. I thought that I could just keep adding pts to BH but I now realize that’s wrong. I’m going to respec and use the pts I have left over and put them into Lightening Resist. (I’ve struggled to get to 80 believe me and spend millions on resurrecting my Merc but I’m
Starting to see some headway. I play solo as I have no friends who play the game at my age (losers). Thank you again for your helpful reply.

Every two points you put into your resist auras you will get on point to your max res to your character resistance. So two resist light = one extra max light res. Good for doing Ubers.

I also just realized that when I removed my plus skills gear Vigor is now at 10 hard points but everything else has 20 hard pts so it’s making more sense now.

Having the Concentration Aura equiped is really a must for hammerdin as it’s adding a lot to the hammer damage.

I usually max hammer, synergies, concentration THEN put remaining points in holy shield. You shouldn’t have maxed everything at level 80 yet so i figure you may have missed concentration.

Always remember this, in Hell Difficulty the 2 things that will kill your character the quickest:

#1 : Low Lightening Resistance
#2 : Low Fire Resistance

Hammerdins are pretty awesome in my book as their attack has both magic as well as physical damage. There aren’t many (notice I didn’t say none lol) magical immune creatures in the game, and if you stumble across one, hammerdins can still deal physical damage (not to mention the buffs your auras give).

From one old gamer to another, I’d recommend trying to decide what you want your Hammerdin to be able to do (realistically), and then build towards that. But, don’t neglect the Lightening/Fire resistances my friend. That conviction aura that some elite monsters have can be a royal pain in the rear-end.

One point into redemption can be really handy for those resurrecting monsters as well. Most notably wave two Baal.

Thank you very much. I do have Concentration maxed so theoretically I’ve done what I can. In Act V Hell now and yes the Lightening Resist I now realize is what I have to increase. All my resistances are in the positive so “Smoke” is another thing I’ll try. As for being realistic, at this stage I just want to be able to beat the game in Hell and then farm and find items that so many others seem to already have. At 64 I need to do this over the next 20 years. Then I’ll be satisfied. ( Says a lot about a game that keeps us motivated for so long. Some awesome people helping me doesn’t hurt either )

Also at this stage I don’t know if I should continue to crawl my way towards Baal or just go back and do Chaos Sanctuary runs and farm Mephisto until I hit level 85 then go to Act V.

Having as many levels as possible under your belt is never a bad thing when it comes to fighting your way to Baal, but you’re a Hammerdin and they can dish out some pretty serious damage and that combined with the auras Hell difficulty should be minimally painful haha.
