Had items disappear

I had a bunch of small charms and tome of identity/town portal disappear from my inventory. Fortunately, nothing extremely valuable that I can tell. I’m not positive but I might have lost a warcry/life charm too though. I’m just not positive if that’s what was in the slot.

I’m told this is related to having a large number of single slot items on one character. Does anyone know if that’s true?

This logic kinda makes sense because I mule my rings/ammys on this character.

From what I understand, each character file is limited to 8192 bytes. The first 765 bytes of the character file are for your characters information: Character type, level, stat/skill point distribution, remaining health, quests info, which weapon slot is active, mercenary info, etc. Byte 766 to 8192 is variable in size and is reserved for items on your character, in your characters personal inventory, the main stash, the cube, what items are on your mercenary and what item your Iron Golem is made from.

The original stash size in D2:LoD was 48 slots, D2:R increased that to 100. The additional three shared tabs are their own separate file. I’m assuming that there was a bit of an oversight on the character limitation, which would be more common to happen on a character used to store numerous small magic items like charms and jewels.

When you exit the game, your character file is saved. If the item data exceeds that 8192 byte limit, any items that happen to be at the “end” of the file past that 8192 byte mark are truncated in order to make the file size equal 8192 bytes or less.

Avoiding this problem means not storing a large number of single slot magical items on a single character.

A fix would be to either increase the character byte size limit, or to reduce the characters stash size.

Yeah as explained by TDJ this is due to the 8 KB save file limit, the devs need to bump it up to like 10 or 12 KB to fix this bug.

Should’ve been fixed long ago but alas it wasn’t. Hope they fix the loading screen vulnerability issue while they’re at it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah I would love to get an update on this.

I can only imagine this 8KB limit are very hardcoded - or they are really not aware about this really important issue.

The fact that blizz has not attempted to even confirm whether they are fixing this and for them to release something like the terror zones in the mean time should tell everyone something about how they are running this game… personally I just get rid of everything unless I know that I will be using it on a character…

Yeah seems to me that they are looking for a new job and want to create some kind of new “system” that they can add to their CV then.

Looks more fancy than “just” fixing bugs I guess…
