GPU Temperature bug with details

Hey there,

as you all know there is a GPU melting issue that’s plaguing this particular game.
This bug triggers at irregular intervals (5 to 30 mins) (even when just standing / moving around in town in act 1).
It’s only happening in this particular game, thus implying it’s an engine related bug.
When it triggers the following SUDDEN CHANGES happen:

GPU Core Clock jumps from 1000 MHz to ~1980 MHz INSTANTLY.
GPU temperature rises from “chill” 50°C to 65°C.
Fan speed ramps up to loud 50% (from silent 30%).
GPU Load drops from 85% to ~50% (paradoxically).
Voltage goes from 0.7V to 1.0V and stays there.

No matter what you do AFTER this bug happens, you cannot fix it.
No graphics changes, no legacy-gfx-switch (legacy mode puts both clocks down to 200 and 120 MHz respectively, but leaving sets them back to ~2000 MHz),
no save & exit and new game, nothing helps except restarting the entire game client.

GPU utilities like RTSS or Afterburner stop working when this happens (indicating that it could also be a driver issue).

Tested with:
GPU: GeForce GTX 1070.
OS: latest Windows 10 21H1.
Driver: 472.12 (d2r ready driver).
NV CPL: 60 FPS lock & VSYNC on.

NO INGAME SETTINGS WHATSOEVER (quality, resolution, sharpness, windowed/fullscreen, etc.) have ANY effect on this issue.

The only thing that resolves it is a hard restart of the .exe.

I’m relatively certain that people that have GPU heat issues are experiencing this exact bug.

Want to check it for yourself?
Start monitoring your GPU temperature when starting a new game, sit in town or move around,
after some time you’ll notice a sudden change in the graphs.

Hello,
Little confused here, none of the temps or values you mention seem high? 65C is well below even close to being considered running hot for a GPU. 50% fans is extremely low. Your GPU boost clocks are…boosting.
Thank you

I’ve been consistently experiencing the same thing and also noticed it coincides with my Rivatuner overlay disappearing – but it also completely tanks my performance. Fans ramp up to 100%, as well as GPU usage and strangely enough vram usage. After a ton of troubleshooting, can confirm the only thing that fixes it is a reset of the game. I’ve even tried pushing through the initial performance drops a few times, and my performance will actually continually decrease until the game outright crashes.

My drivers are up to date, none of my hardware is overheating, I have the game installed on an NVMe, I limit the amount of programs running simultaneously with the game, and my hardware is over the recommended specs (2080 Super, i7 8700k, and 32 gigs of 3200mhz ram). At this point, it’s clearly an issue with the engine, as I’m not the only one experiencing this.

Can we please get a response to this? I made a similar post and none was had.

Same here. Nvidia Drivers are up to date.

ASUS 20170 Super + AMD 3700X

  • GPU Load is always 100%
  • Power Draw almost 200 Watt … insane!
  • GP Clock and Memory Clock on Maximum
  • GPU Temp > 60 C

Mining bitcoins causes much less temperature problems. Insane…

FYI miners don’t mine ‘bitcoins’ with GPUs anymore.

Bump – this needs to be looked into.

Developers are not monitoring this forum. If you feel you’ve encountered a bug, please make it known in #bug-report

I have the same problem with a 4k monitor (144hz), had to set the scaling to 50%, and set the max fps to 60 (there are 2 sliders), now I can play, before it was shutting down the whole computer (sic!) when loading the level, it’s some madness! (I turn off freesync too)

I did, no one responded to it.

I tried that as well, it still happens unfortunately.

Did you set your after burner auto limit by temp instead of power limit. what it does is downclock the gpu in order to stabilize temp. but if you choose by power limit you will get really high temp.

I got a GTX 1070 and that’s how I fixed it, no longer gets over 82c.

Hey there (again),

I’ve found a resolution and made a new post about it here: https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/d2r/t/gpu-excessive-temperatures-caused-by-wardenanticheat-partially/13694

50c isn’t chill and if you had a real gaming pc it would be water cooled and CHILLING at 32-36C i barely push 45-46c with my cooling set up lmao --------2021 BUD
