GGM's Terror Zone Feedback

Hello Guys and Gals, Ginger Gaming Mentor here I spent about 11 hours yesterday playing with the Patch and having fun going through the Terror Zones so I wanted to give my Feedback on them.

Let’s Start With The Good

#1 Encourages Use of Zones that are otherwise not visited.

This is a really big one for me and one of the reason I love the Terror Zones So much. They create a very interesting way of encouraging players to go to and play in zones they wouldn’t have thought twice about before.

#2 Perhaps Difficult for Botters to Exploit

Some of these zones are extremely difficult to program for, without static routes, or a specific monster to hunt, as well as the zones themselves being completely random makes for lots of wildcards that could potentially make botting much more difficult in these zones.

#3 Easier Leveling to 99

It’s no secret that I am a youtuber, and no secret that I attempted to hit lvl 99 this season the legitimate way. Which is to say not having an entire team of people feed you diablo, nihlathak and baal kills. And Not having 7 other people sit around in the game letting me kill everything myself.

What I discovered is that for a solo person to hit 99 in 4 months with it basically being their job working at it 8-12 hour days it is next to impossible.

So I am actually quite excited that they decided to fix this, not just for me but for the massive number of people with jobs who can’t devote anywhere near the amount of time I can.

#4 Less Boring Leveling to 99

So, it’s no secret that Leveling a Character to 99 requires doing the same runs over and over again for hundreds of hours. It’s boring, and it’s not surprising that it’s mind numbingly boring because you are literally performing the same repetitive task over and over again for sometimes 8-10 hours a day.

So a Relief from this boredom is welcome.

#5 A Fun Challenge

Having new high level areas to go is a fun challenge more so than the lvl 85 areas we currently have. I do really enjoy the idea of eventually getting to be able to do lvl 96 cows, lvl 96 Chaos, lvl 96 baal runs, lvl 96 Tower, and lvl 96 travincal.

There is no end to the fun I think that can be had in this Terror system if it is done properly

#6 The Zones Scale with your character

This is a great feature Imo because it allows anyone to participate in the zones, and have an on level place to exp up. I do however think that the zones should be limited like The cow level in that it requires you to complete the difficulty setting to participate.

Now Let’s Get To The Bad

#1 Monster Density is too low.

I don’t know what’s going on with the monster density in these new terror zones but they feel like they are less than normal. Which is saying a lot.

The Density of the monster groups in these zones needs to be increased dramatically, the main issue here is that as I run through the Terror zones I am met with almost entirely empty space. Which is a very bad thing.

#2 zones need a big monster to feel real terror

I feel like the idea solid but what would really make it better is if a specific super unique monster were spawned into zones with a much higher level. Something that would challenge the players. Perhaps that also has a similar mechanic to the ubers that spawns monsters around it continually. These spawned monsters would of course have no exp.

#3 The Zones need to be more difficult

As it is in players 1 the zones are unfortunately quite pathetic in difficulty. I would like to see the difficulty of the zones bumped up quite a bit. If these zones are supposed to induce Terror, Let’s have them be terrorizing. To do that they need to be difficult, and the more difficult imo the better.

#4 Some of the zones are too small and and need to be linked to others.

As a For instance let me point out glacial trail, which is for some reason not linked with Drifter Cavern. This is a big misstep imo, you need to think about the size of the zones, and add additional zones as required.

Going over your list on the news article I can pull out several options.

Frigid Highlands should include the special zone within it, I believe it’s abbadon(The Giant Red Portal)

I Think River of Flame and Chaos Sanctuary should be together

Travincal is too small by itself and needs to include the Temples in Kurast Causeway

Tristram is too small on it’s own, and you should honestly combine Tristram and Moo Moo Farms because they are linked by the leg anyway.

Black Marsh should include The Forgotten Tower

Arreat Plateau Should Include the Pit of Acheron

#5 Single Player needs Terror Zones Too

I don’t know what the plans are for Terror Zones, whether they are planned for ladder only, everyone, or just online players. I am not sure, but Terror Zones should definitely be available to Single player characters.

#6 No Restriction for use

I do really like the idea of These Terror Zones, but I feel like just like the cow level they should be restricted to beating the difficulty setting. Just like the cow level though if a player who has completed the difficulty setting creates a game than they can participate.

Infact pretty much just copy the cow levels Restrictions exactly.

#7 Teleport/Town Portal would make things to easy

To increase the Terror of the zones, make Teleport/Town Portal disabled within the zones. This would have a nice double edged effect of making it more challenging, and hurting botters at the same time.

In closing I want to say that I feel like this is an amazing idea, that both utilizes existing content within the game, and encourages players to go to zones they would not normally go to. Breaks the monotony of Baal, Diablo, and Nihlathak runs. As Well as can be toggled off for those that would rather not participate.

The Terror Zones have my Complete backing, and although I do feel they need some tweaks to become amazing. The Dev Team has really hit on a gold mine here, and you need to continue refining it until it’s 99.9% pure gold.

Pretty good post that covers all of the big points people have been mentioning. Hopefully Blizz is even reading this forum.

I played yesterday with GGM and agree with all the points made. It is a very nice gem of an addition and needs very little to polish it and make it perfect.

Great points. I really agree with them all. The idea of this feature being able only for those who finished the game is important. This must be an end gaming feature. The density must be highed too. Nice stuffs.

Blizzard , listen to Ginger , he knows his stuff . Also I would like to piggy back off these thread suggestions and say that single player definitely needs this . I will not play online because I like the single player static maps and online is so full of gear that people have traded or purchased ; single player makes you work for everything that much longer and harder and the gratification from achieving that goal is excellent . For example I farmed LK on P8 for 4 months to make an infinity . It was torturous but I’ll always treasure that item. Don’t forget about your single player customers ! Also for the love of God give us rune stacking and currency tab

All good points except two:

A big no disabling Teleport… Just no.

I think it’s maybe a bit too harsh with disabling town portal entirely… Perhaps make it so when you port to town, the portal closes? So it’d make the run less efficient if you do have to port to town for whatever reason.

“Ack, forgot to top off the arrow bundle.” We’ve all done it.

If there’s anything that really needs to be disabled or at least a timer added, it’s the ability to chicken/exit the game when you’re about to be massacred… And this needs to be added whether or not we’re in a Terror Zone. :stuck_out_tongue:

ALmost agree with everything but the Town Portal not being able to be used. Its just bad thinking, specially because we think they should do it harder, wich usually mean better geared characters needed and less inventory space.

This will only add people coming to the entrance, droping itens, coming back the map where they were, then back to entracne, than back to where they were, and so on, seems like a good idea but becomes just a nuisance.

Make tz mobs immunity unbreakable. That will lead ppl to find more new builds. It’s endgame tz, suppose to be hard

I have made my own topic but I will post it also here to see what do you think GGM

I think that Terror zones was cool idea, but it fails because of power creep of game. Who will benefit from terror zones? Characters who are alredy most powerful. Why? Well mostly because monsters with higher level are barely challange and because of Immunities.

Hammerdin, Zerker, Javazon/Light sorc with Infinity, these will again dominate while others who will face many immune monsters will struggle.

There are two ways how to deal with this:

1) Removing immunities from regular monsters
Maybe unpopular opinion for some, but it would solve the issue that many builds will simply not be capable to farm just as well or not at all these terror zone locations. But there is one downside to this. Terror zones have bigger chance to drop items from higher Treasue classes and items with higher level so farming them effectively raise number of items found on server. Its hard to say by how much as testing tools (characters) prepared by blizzard sadly are not well made for proper testing. But I would say that number of good item drops will be noticable definitely. So yeah, removing immunities will make farming better for everoyne and not just few, but at cost of more found items. Well its not downside of my proposition really. Its downside of Terror zone change, but I see it as downside vs my second more prefered solution.

2) Make terror zones impossible to farm solo
Terror zones would be great if it was actualy something where you need to group up and play with others to beat the zones. If monsters with higher levels above 85 would have significant boost to life, damage and most importantly to resistances making them randomly immune or highly resistant versus various elements, it would make these zones practicaly impossible to beat solo. This would achiev what what this game need. More group play where people actualy play together. Rewards is of course more higher TC items by killing higher level monsters. And we will not have issue with market being flooded by more elite items as they will be devided amongst players who play together.

If anyone from blizzard read this, please next time make some easy ways how to make items on PTR…It can be done with cure recibes where you can degenerate items easiyl with some changes just for PTR.

Well i am not sure if its lower than normaly, but if they would raise denisity, more monsters with high levels means more dropped elite items, so idk if I would like to see that honestly.

But if blizzard would make terror zones impossible to farm solo, then density increase would be find as people will share loot.

Cool idea.

I mean I understand ya, but this is something that is already in the game with uber tristram. Not like we are breaking new ground here.

Dont wory about botters they will find way ,its not kolbot.

I understand that… But Terror Zones are for leveling up, not for obtaining an overpowered charm.

I think we could have mini bosses in the Terrorized zones,
but i think we should avoid reusing the main bosses that are used for uber,
and instead use “uberized” versions of minibosses in the game depending on what act you are in.
Act 1 - Butcher
Act 2 - Horazon
Act 3 - High Council (one of them?)
Act 4 - Izual (or Hephasto)
Act 5 - Minion of Destruction

That way those minibosses gets abit more exposure, a place to shine.
And it could also be seen as enemy forces activly fighting back,
rather then just passivly guarding quest area as in the normal game.
Makes the game feel more dynamic.
Maybe include voice lines, making it sound as if they are here specifically to target you down.

I like it, a custom one for each act sounds good.

Uber tristam zone is really small and you have the red portal there, i agree that take out portals is nothing good.

First off, I wanted to say well done by the developers for trying an exciting new feature for D2R, namely Terror Zones. With that said, I would like to share a few thoughts for improving the overall experience…

Terror Zones

General Changes

  • Enable Terror Zones for Single Player
  • Consider renaming “Terror Zones” to “Realms of Terror” to retain fantasy
  • Terror Zones completely random (spontaneous events). Upon clearing a Terror Zone, a new random Terror Zone in that game will become active
  • Terror Zones prevent use of Town Portals and Teleport (challenging zones)
  • Breakable containers in Terror Zones have chance to summon Champion Pack, similar to the Evil Urn

Environment & Aesthetics

  • Terror Zones in perpetual darkness (night cycle, fit thematic atmosphere)
  • Instead of purple font used to highlight a Terrorized Zone (aesthetic feels wrong), consider highlighting zone name with flames, similar to D2R Logo
  • Waypoint with distinct design for Terror Zones for easy identification nice QoL feature

Expand & Consolidate Zones

  • Add Abaddon to Frigid Highlands
  • Add Pit of Acheron to Arreat Plateau
  • Add Drifter Cavern to Glacial Trail
  • Add Arreat Summit to Ancient’s Way and Icy Cellar
  • Add City of the Damned to Outer Steppes and Plains of Despair
  • Add Kurast Causeway, Disused Reliquary, Ruined Fane to Travincal
  • Add Ancient Tunnels to Lost City, Valley of Snakes and Claw Viper Temple
  • Combine Tristram to Moo Moo Farm
  • Combine River of Flame to Chaos Sanctuary
  • Combine Lower Kurast to Kurast Bazaar, Ruined Temple and Disused Fane

Monster Difficulty

  • Terror Zones have double monster density and triple the Champion Packs to fit theme of endless demonic hordes
    • Champion Packs always Aura Enchanted in Terror Zones
    • Guest monster mechanic adds non-standard monsters in Terror Zones (e.g. Venom Lords in Blood Moor)
  • Monsters in Terror Zones have minimum Resistance of 33% for Fire, Cold, Lightning, Poison, Physical and Magic
  • Make “Terror Versions” for Superuniques with unique color palette
  • Terror Zones have rare chance to spawn an Uber Butcher, one of the most iconic monsters in the Diablo franchise. There is nothing more terrifying than hearing, “AHH, FRESH MEAT!”

and for the love of god, can we get some console support. KMB enabled for one would be major upgrade for us and much appreciated, in game chat, etc…

Yes but in the Terror Zones you have three or more exits.

The Waypoint in, The Entrance in, The Exit out of, and potentially any small zones inside of them like the temples in lower kurast that are not part of the zone.

The difference between one entrance and one exit vs 3-6 entrances and exits.

Yes like when you do the Temple quest and everything goes dark =) I like it.

Easy done the name could be purple

Super Scary sir are you the director for a horror film? lol

I do like the ideas though.

Fantastic Post - supporting a number of comments:

“The Good” - I completely agree with points 1-6.

“The Bad”.

  1. Correct - please set a minimum monster density in these areas - similarly to how it was done in the previous patch for level 87 areas.

  2. This would be SO much fun. Maybe make one of the 6 uber bosses spawn in each area (random location - hell only). They drop no items, but give exp; would REALLY add the whole new concept of “terror”!

  3. Agree; maybe set the minimum resistances of monsters in this area to 40%? Maybe increase their HP by 50% and damage by 25%; something to give them a bump - but not unwieldy.

  4. Great point! Take a look at each “zone” and semi-normalize the total number of unique monsters by incorporating adjacent zones/expanding its coverage a bit.

  5. Sure!

  6. Kind of disagree - could be useful to farm in nightmare/normal for exp/drops.

  7. OMG restricting teleport would be SO much fun - really upping the challenge! I’m against restricting TP usage because in public ladder games - you might join 1-2 minutes after game creation and want to join the party - in these instances having a TP is really important to team play.
