I’m entering so many battlenet games where there is 4 or 5 hammerdins just spamming their 12k spell that kills everything in 1 or 2 seconds. My diablo 2 battlenet experience is so dull and not fun. Seriously Blizzard, it’s time to nerf this ridiculously too strong build that every paladin players tends to play and that ruins the played class diversity. Honestly, just check the overall played class and build on battlenet and I’m pretty sure you would find around 30-40% players online only playing this peculiar holy hammer build. It’s so exuberantly overpowered that not only most paladin players only choose to play like this, but most battlenet players only play like this.
My suggestion is first of all, add more ‘magic immune’ characteristic (non-elemental magic) to monsters, so that the hammerdin would encounter more in game. There are so few in the game actually. Secondly, remove the hidden concentration aura bonus that increases the holy hammer damages ridiculously. By the way, concentration aura is supposed to improve physical damages from physical attacks and it’s nowhere supposed to increase magic damages. Otherwise, fanatism and might aura for instance would also increases magic damages (which is not the case) if you read the skill tooltip in the same way that concentration does, meaning, no increase in magical damages from magical attacks from these auras. I believe that this hidden bonus should never have existed in the first place; it’s just non-sense. Holy hammer skill is strong enough only with it’s official synergies alone when everything related to it is boosted to maximum, without the hidden concentration aura bonus.
If for instance you would nerf this hidden bonus from concentration aura and add more ‘magic immune’ feature to monsters in game, I think this hammerdin build would be more fair and more balanced and also, a less exagerated percentage of overall online players would not only play that specific build. I’m not the only player complaining about this, there are several others who are tired to only see this specific build populating online battlenet games. Listen to this advice. If you want to balance the diablo 2 skills someday, begin with this exagerated build, for this would be an excellent start.
There’s a significant portion of people that are going to find what’s considered the strongest spec in the game is and play that.
If they nerf it those people will find the next strongest and the process will repeat. If you’re bothered by what other people choose to play I don’t know what to tell you. I’m fine for rebalancing specs but that isn’t going to stop people from just doing the same thing afterwords. Stop worrying about how others choose to play the game and just play it the way you enjoy it.
and stop complaining about one build. there’s plenty of others to choose from to play and all are fun
i have a hdin and still run plenty of other builds:
ele druid - for variety. run baals and chaos with it
javazon - for cows
smiter - for ubers
blizz sorc - for 500mf boss kills
The typical reply which does not agree with good commun sense. Your argument doesn’t hold in regard to battlenet games because the result is there; this is what games are crowded with and the online experience is boring because of this. Not all players have your ‘I play different’ mentality, sadly, it’s more about what is ‘most powerful to play and most easy to play’. Sorry mate, I play other build like you, but encountering everytime games loaded with hammerdin doesn’t help with the game fun. Blizzard just needs to balance this one, because it’s a little too much overpowered and easy to play compared to other existing strong builds.
I’m complaining about the battlenet multiplayer games experience it delivers in the end. Games loaded with hammerdins, boring. Period.
Iono, seems to me the primary thing that should make the game fun is you enjoying what you’re playing. If what other people are playing is significantly effecting your enjoyment of the game I have to agree Diablo is probably not the game for you.
That’s like 5 builds, let’s say we stretch to 15. THat is so little compare to to their arpg where there are like 50, 100s of viable builds.
Even D3 where many hardcore D2 players like to mock has 3-6 good builds per class, and some additionalem fun but less competitive ones.
Obviously there a will be a few builds that will come out on top. But the differences between top and others shouldn’t be day and night. Look at PoE, or even D3, each season you get a more balance distribution of class and build played. D2 are dominated by sorc at start of ladder and hammedin later.
Hopefully the balance some less use under power skills in the PTR.
If all strong builds would be almost equivalent, you would see more class diversity online. But this is not the case. Hammerdin build is so overpowered compared to others that most games are populated with this. Otherwise you would see more class repartitions all around. But no.
I only play some kind of zealer or smiter paladin. Hammerdin is annoying as hell to play. There are other options for good magic finders besides hammerdin and they are all more fun.
Well maybe this isn’t the game for me in multiplayer mode because of this overpowered build that most plays. Perhaps I should stick to offline mode only. Or, maybe we should take a rather constructive approach, and encourage Blizzard to balance this too much strong build so that it becomes a strong build like other strong builds? What do you think?
My favorite right now is pure lite sorc. Not sure what the next character I’ll build is. Just farming to buy an anni. When I get my anni I’ll think about the next dude to build

As I mentioned, I’m not against Blizzard rebalancing classes. Hell, I remember playing D2 back in the day when you almost NEVER saw Hammerdins before they blew up in popularity. It’s fine to think there should be more balance, however if how others choose to play the game bothers you to the point where it’s significantly impacting your ability to enjoy the game then I think this is an issue that will continue for you even if lets say Blizzard suddenly nerfed hammerdins over night. At the end of the day you can’t control how other people choose to play the game, and you’re going to go crazy trying to do so, especially for a game like D2 which was never particularly well balanced to begin with.
if you are going off these forums, i have to tell you, these forums are a VERY small minority of d2 players as a whole. there are FAR LARGER d2 communities, and a majority of them are perfectly happy with the game
You know when people start using the “you’re the minority we’re the majority” with no actual solid way of backing that up with real data it doesn’t actually convince others of anything right?
I agree, but I’m hoping for a balancing patch which would reduce this exageration and that in the end, would affect positively my online battlenet experience of D2 Resurrected which I bought in hope that I could relive the nostalgia of playing with not so many hammerdins online like it was back then in old D2. But doh! now it’s not the case like it has been! You see.
