Game Stuck At Black Screen On Startup

When I start the game I see the blizzard intro screen and the D2R intro screen and after that I get a black screen with the D2R logo in the bottom right and D2 music playing but I am permanently stuck on the black screen. Starting in windowed mode does not resolve it. I played yesterday before the most recent patch with no issues.

I am on the latest version of Windows 10 Home and a AMD Radeon R9 380 graphics card

Update:
I figured out it was Windows Firewall blocking connection with no errors or messages, I am not sure what changed with the most recent patch but it affected this. Also, the fact the i couldn’t even get to the single player option shows there is a missing error handling with connections

Nay young grasshopper… twas just Gill Bates and Microsoftdoggydoodoos privacy invasion changing your Windows 10 settings. The only way to avoid this is by reinstalling Windows 10 1903 every 30 days before it gets a chance to update and further invade your privacy. Many games have problems running on Windows 10 after it updates, at least for me, so take this info with a grain of salt and make sure to back up your stuff before you go gun-hoe. Sure it involves redoing all of your game settings once a month but is that such a big price to pay to stop the massive invasion of privacy that Windows 10 unfortunately provides? Just make sure to go into the update settings and “pause updates” for the maximum amount of time that Windows 10 allows BEFORE, and I can’t stress this enough, BEFORE you connect to the internet. (30 some odd days)

This sounds like I have the same problem or very similar. Does anyone else think that reinstalling W10 1903 once a month is a practical solution? Is there no other way? TheIrishStud at least posted something as a solution… what about a reply from the devs? I suppose I won’t be playing today… maybe if it doesn’t startup later on, I’ll uninstall D2R and reinstall it. I sure hope D4 isn’t so buggy… and of course D2 is a relic code-wise but large corporations have been known to ruin games in the past; intentionally or not.

This is what I posted in another forum, just a short while ago:
I just tried to play a few minutes ago and the launcher could not find the game. Since it was offering to “INSTALL” with a blue button after I logged into BattleNet, I clicked it. I took NO time to install and present the “LAUNCH” button. However, it gets stuck and has been stuck for 5 minutes with the glove pointer on a black screen… and YES I did restart my PC after the so called install and it is f’d up still. This truly sucks. EDIT: Did a scan and after the scan it did a brief update… STILL gets stuck.

I have turned off my firewalls and it still won’t start. At least let us run in offline mode… PLEASE. Or else tell me WTF is wrong.

I forgot to mention this before but check your AMD settings and make sure you’re using recommended drivers and software instead of experimental driver and software versions that sometimes download and install automatically if you have it setup like that. Do this either before or after you reinstall D2R to see if that fixes your issue. I have an AMD RX 580 4GB gpu and some games did break in the past because I chose to use the most recently released software and driver updates instead of the recommended ones. This is what I thought initially before I hoped down a few rabbit holes and discovered just how bad Windows 10 is, privacy wise, compared to previous versions of Windows operating systems.

Until a competitor rises up and challenges the Windows operating system with something better and just as easy to use, with anti-cheat and DRM working all the time unlike Linux, there’s really nothing the developers or publishers can do about it. I’m sorry that you’re experiencing this kind of thing but the information I’ve provided seems to be the only workaround that I can find personally.

A little extra pro-tip if reinstalling doesn’t work but after you reinstall windows change the file location for your appdata and documents to another hard-drive where Windows 10 isn’t installed. This will ease the suffering of future heart ache when you discover that changing your appdata and document file saving locations, to another hard-drive where windows isn’t installed, prevents you from losing the vast majority of your offline game saves and cached direct x DLL’s for certain modern and older game titles. (Edit - Then again if you’re reinstalling windows and pausing updates for an attempted fix it doesn’t hurt to just simply reinstall past and present direct x files once you’re officially ready to go on windows 10 1903 provided your hardware is of a steady quality and re-installation is fairly short and simple. My hardware is fairly modern so it only takes me 1 day off to completely reinstall and reset everything I use on a PC. Obviously the better hardware you have the less time it’s going to take to reinstall, re-update drivers, and begin trial and error.)

Best of luck my fellow demon slayer. I hope something I provided helps remedy your issue if only for a 30 day period. Worst case scenario, and my method doesn’t help your current issue, just take a break for 3 months to a year. Come back after a large portion of updates and bug fixes.

God knows I’m gonna have to do the same thing eventually when PC controls tick me off. I’d rather be playing with a controller but the X button doesn’t drop inventory loot and I know controller support bugs on PC is the least of their troubles right now. It’s a give and take scenario. However much time you’re willing give for trial and error while at the same time knowing however much time you’re willing to take away from the game should trial and error fail to fix your issue.

Thanks much. I’ve been fighting with computers since they were invented, in both hardware and software roles. IIRC D1 was much easier to use (meaning fewer bugs) than this thing. I think I’ve had enough for now and D4 is something I will carefully examine and wait until a good amount of evidence is in on reliability etc.

One thing I’d like to go back to is when a reboot fixed just about anything. O.o $ IS the root of all evil; ROI (aka profits) has convinced so many to just get the damn game/utility/whatever out the door and worry about bugs later. The addicted will just have to suffer if they can’t break the habit.

Edit: Playing D2 LOD again is fun now, I can go back to MULES and TCPIP_ doing without the increased stash size.

This is FIXED for me, thanks to whomever fixed this!

I have now realized that this was not for all characters, it was only for characters who had last logged in to Act 5. I am unable to access ACT5 on any of my characters, it freezes on trying to load…

Same problem here anyone figure this out ?
