Game is broken on Nintendo Switch

Ever since the update on August 20, 2024, the Single Player mode on Nintendo Switch is completely broken. If you create a new character, you will lose all of your progress as the character will not save locally. Once you close the game and reopen it, the character will no longer exist.

Also, if you are connected to internet while playing single player, the game will crash 100% of the time when you select “Save and Quit”.

The game seems to be running on a Test Version in offline mode. The Version info when offline says 1.6.81942 - TEST. This may be the issue.

I have the same issue with creating characters. There is seemingly nothing I can do to create a new character and have it not disappear. I’ve tried staying in-game for over an hour. I’ve lingered a long time on the character select screen. Etc. It always disappears.

It’s a shame the Switch version is so neglected. There’s been so many issues. I still have problems with items vanishing too. It’s hard to play a loot-driven game, when all my best loot gets erased.

Is the game still busted for you guys? Im really upset about this

Wow, I can’t believe this… This is production software… on the (soon to be) best selling console of all time (Nintendo Switch)… and it says “1.6.81942 TEST”… the worst part is that I could have chosen to not download the latest version, but I chose to download instead - thinking that I want the most recent version with bug fixes… it feels like I just nuked my own copy of the game on my Nintendo Switch… very disappointing…

Blizzard does not care if Diablo 2 is broken we already paid. This is blizzard after all, when people got their accounts hacked for blizz slobbiness, these absolute units blamed the players. I hate blizzard and now that i cant play the game i paid for i have no further use for a blizzard account.

I have the same problem too. I spent two days leveling up my druid, but then I decided to click “save and exit” and closed the app. When I launched the game, I discovered that my druid was gone. I’m upset, Blizzard, are you planning to fix this?

I’m still experiencing this issue on my Switch 2. To test it, I created three new offline characters, loaded into the game with each one, then used Save & Exit. When I restarted the game, all three characters were gone. My existing characters still work, but I can’t create any new ones without them being deleted. Not to be hyperbolic, but this makes the game essentially unplayable. I can’t create any new hardcore characters or mules.

I dont feel like rewriting my solution. Do a search and you’ll find my post about it.

I assume you’re referring to your post here: Dissapearing Characters (Nintendo Switch) - #5 by Callisto-21652. I already tried this (creating multiple characters in the hope that one would be saved). As I mentioned directly in my post above, it did not work for me. Several others in this thread also reported the same workaround did not resolve their issue. There is clearly something else going on here.

Guess it’s case by case. I done this on a V1 Switch if that matters. Everything is up to date as far as patch for system and game. Nothing more I can give if I can’t do more testing. As my solution worked for me. Well keep at it hoping one day it sticks.

It’s sad Blizzard won’t continue fixing their game.

I’ve tested multiple workarounds today with mixed results. All tests were done with at minimum 2 characters and played for a few minutes making sure the save symbol was shown.

The following all resulted in new offline characters being deleted upon restarting the game:

  • Creating 2-3 characters at once (and playing each for ~5 minutes) - unique names or not
  • Manually forcing Nintendo’s Cloud backup
  • Before restarting the game, logging into a Battle.net character
  • Disabling Internet entirely (not connected to Battle.net)
  • Deleting an old character before creating new ones

On my last test, I deleted two softcore offline characters before creating two new hardcore characters. The first hardcore character I made was retained after restarting. Same name as a previous attempt.

The last test suggests there may be some type of unexpected character slot limit or file system bug at play.

It may also be that this bug happens randomly and I happened to get lucky the last attempt.

For reference, I have 25 offline characters (both softcore and hardcore) and 6 online characters.

Hopefully this gets some attention at Blizzard.

I done about the same without playing 5 minutes. Just Save & Exit 2x. I’m currently at max characters 24 online and 30 offline. The last one took luck.

I have the same problem with creating new offline characters. I have 15 created, so I should be able to create more. None of the solutions above work.
