Game doesn't pause

I was playing DIIR on Switch (offline), I needed to get up for a minute and brought up the Switch home menu. When I came back, my character had died. Is this intentional to not have a way to pause? I remember in the original DII on pc, one could pause the game if they needed to.

If you’re online you can’t pause (not sure about offline mode).

The next best thing is open a portal to town. Step through. Go do what needs to be done. Go back through the portal and everything is as you left it. so you can keep playing.

Offline doesn’t pause either while players are in the menus.

At least, not on the Switch anyways.

I’ve been opening a town portal and getting up to do stuff while idling in town.

Noticed this too… I presumed it’s how classic works, is that right?

Back to town for a break. So old school, but I’m enjoying the classic experience for something different.

It never paused to my knowledge. You just go to town when going afk
I think people are confusing the ESC menu from the old game as a pause…that did “pause” your screen but I don’t think it prevented the game from still running.

What’s different now are these systems keep games running int he background in a suspend or active state so its like hitting esc and then esc again.

YOU HAVE TO GO TO TOWN to pause…

I use the town portal as a pause. If you’re in town you won’t get killed…

not sure but…“working as intended” ? ?? maybe…

ESC always paused it in single player.
ESC never paused if you were online / bnet.

and from what ive seen with the Switch version, it doesn’t seem to pause at all while offline. which is pretty sad.

also if you go back to town to “afk”/pause, you have a limited timer before you get kicked out of the game for inactivity. I learned that the hard way, i got to a new area and before exploring i kicked back to town to look up info on the area and my wife needed something, next thing i know im back to play and it booted me out for inactivity… ugh!

It pauses buy you need to tab over to the options, save and exit screen. I have left it there for probably 15 minutes while running to Casey’s. I was right in the dead middle of a pack of mobs. They need to make it where the start button brings us to that screen first and we have to tab over to inventory.

That’s a bad idea, you want to access the inventory far more often than pausing the game.

Well maybe give us an option in options to set it that way. Right now it goes to whatever screen it wants, it’s not always the inventory. And if I’m playing HC I want it to Pause everytime.

I noticed this too, even you press ” start button ” to get menu it doesn’t pause. Problem probably is that when you press start button it opens inventory at first place on console instead of main menu where you can save and exit. If you want to do something like fast toilet or open a door for someone you should hit a tp and go to town. This is kinda lame tbh but we had to live with this. Personally i would also like to pause a single player progression, like seriously… This has to be first solo game ever which you can’t pause with start button

Cmon Bli$$ard…

There is no escape (similar button) on console…so that what you’re referring to doesn’t apply here.

i meant unlike the old PC version vs new version on the Switch.

i could’ve worded it better, my apologies

Depending on the game, PS4/PS5 Option button can behave like a pause button.

Nope there is no pause in SP game on console, unless you tp back to town and just w8 there.
This is not the PC version where you just hit ESC and the game stops in SP.
PS: On Battlenet you can’t pause too nvm PC or whatever, nvm old game or remastered.
