With what do you go about it and where? What are the best builds to survive and prosper until you get decent gear.
Farming should be the same as in softcore, no different.
Safest build is a summon necro, you can complete the whole game naked. It might be slow, but not many other chars can do the same.

Summon necro with a might merc and corpse explosion maxes is how I’ve done him.
The skeletons arnt the killers. It’s a matter of them absorbing damage and getting that first kill to start exploding.
With this hero you can get cheap PTopaz helm and chest for 148%
Aim for a spirit sword or some sort of skill boosting weapon to help your survivability.
Aim for max res or as high as possible.
It’s slow
It’s safe
Farm NM Diablo then onto Countess and Pits.

personally i start with fireball meteor orb sorc (as i’m not pigeonholed into one tree and can kill every monster with merc).
i farm hell andy, meph, pit, ancients tunnels, mauso - crypt (didn’t find a single thing here this season tho), until i find the stuff to switch to lightning.
i even died at 93 after just switching to lit (infinity and griffs down the drain)
but now i’m 95… and they fixed tomb vipers so i don’t think i should be dying.
now if you are looking for non sorc, wind druids are safe and decently quick for solo farming.
the obvious OP hammer pally can kill everything but it’s super lame.
javazons are great for farming hell cows with crap gear. gauranteed to find good bases and runes.
trap assasin also quite safe, but the immunities can be a bit more difficult.
bone necros are ok but they aren’t very fast, would never even consider a summon necro unless you like falling asleep while you game.
horker barbs are GREAT for hell trav. a great way to farm up items.
i dunno… sorcs are the best early game farmers because teleport and their damage don’t require a gear check like barbs or amazons.
The same areas as softcore, those in HC go about it much more slowly is my advice, and if you go down to deal with Nithalik and you see the fart cloud snakes, don’t move.
