Entering wrong difficulty

Playing single player on Nintendo Switch 2.

Several times i have started a game and it enters the wrong difficulty.

At first I found it odd and thought i had made a misstake, i usually never does that by accident, when it happened a few more times i became frustrated and thought maybe you had changed the mechanic on which difficulty it suggests. So i became more aware of what difficulty setting i choose as to not reset my map by accident.

Several times now i have carefully choosen the right difficulty setting, and double checked it, and still ended up in another one.

I have come to the point where i with certainty can say i am not accessing the wrong difficulty by my misstake.

Would it be possible there is a slight upward drift on the controller causing it?

This has just happened to me on Xbox. I’d just finished Nightmare Andariel on my playthrough. I had been doing a few runs, so had been loading new games over and over in Nightmare difficulty.

This morning, I loaded my game and headed to Warriv to ā€œtravel eastā€. No cutscene - strange. I ran through the Act 2 Sewers and defeated Radament - no book of skill. Then I checked my Quest log - all quests in all acts, most already complete. Then I noticed terror zones were available - I was in Normal difficulty.

I saved and quit the game, and when I went to start a new game Nightmare difficulty was already highlighted, as it would be if I had last played on Nightmare.

If this is a new bug, it’s a really weird one, and super annoying if we’re going to lose our maps on the current difficulty.

I am experiencing this as well. The selector is clearly at the Hell difficulty, but once the game starts it is on Normal difficulty. Moving the selection will force the right difficulty to be registered.

Luckly I was able to restore my save file using Nintendo Cloud, or else I would have lost my nicely rolled mech and baal maps.

I’ve just experienced this a second time. I’ve been more careful since the first time to look out for it.

I noticed on this occasion a ā€œplease waitā€ overlay on the screen momentarily before the loading screen, which I’ve never noticed before. Then it loaded into Normal rather than Nightmare difficulty (yes, I’m still playing through Nightmare ). But I definitely selected Nightmare.

Blizzard folk, if you’re reading this please investigate, it’s super annoying. I had a nice Andariel map and now it’s gone. I’ve played thousands of games of D2R and I’m certain this is a new bug.

Noticing the same issue on my Switch2, it definitely is not a ā€œdriftā€ thing since it always defaults to normal. So a slight ā€œdriftā€ would move it to Nightmare and not straight to Normal. Oddly, even cycling through the difficulty selection beforehand doesn’t prevent this issue. Clearly selecting Hell and occassionally still dropped into Normal.

I’ve noticed two aspects tho:

  1. It occurs not if you reselect a new game during regular play, only after putting the System to sleep/leaving the game while on the character selection screen and returning
  2. It doesn’t occur when the Switch 2 is in airplane mode, so there has to be some connection issue with battle.net that causes this ā€œfallbackā€.

But considering it took over a year for the invalid naming bug back on Switch1, I wouldn’t hold my breath to see this fixed anytime soon. As of now, the ā€œsavestā€ option seems to appear to use the airplane mode and, for safety, reselecting difficulty whenever you re-enter the game.

I am noticing this same thing on offline Switch. When I come back from the system being asleep I choose Nightmare and it brings me into a Normal game.
I agree this doesnt happen after I’ve played a difficulty and ā€˜save/quit’ and launch it again. Very annoying to lose maps.

It is not a drift issue, has happened with several different controllers. Also i can see which difficulty is selected, and as others already started i have also now noticed that it for me always changes from hell to normal.

Have pushed a few new characters from start to hell since, this has still never happened while i am playing nightmare. (Not saying it cant happen, but hasnt happened to me yet)

Payed a bit more attention for the last few days and it’s definetly something related with loading, either from the game or battle.net connection.

Once you re-enter the game from the home menu, the red pentagram symbol in the lower right corner will spin for a moment. if you enter the game while it is visible, you get kicked to normal, if you wait for it, you’ll stay in your selected difficulty.

Ever since I wait for the symbol to disapear, I haven’t experienced any wrong difficulty issues.

I have been experiencing this as well while playing off-line on switch. It’s been happening for a few weeks at least. At first I thought maybe I accidentally moved up to nightmare and logged into the game after the third or fourth time I paid very close attention and made sure that the hell difficulty was selected. I can verify for sure that this is a bug in the game that when hell difficulty is selected it sometimes loads you into normal difficult. if all of my maps weren’t reset it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. However, this is quite annoying on off-line play.

I have this problem too. I don’t know how this hasn’t been patched yet. It’s a pretty serious bug.

This has just happened to me a third time on Xbox One. This time, the behaviour was even weirder: after choosing Hell difficulty, which was highlighted, I saw the ā€œPlease Waitā€ prompt (an indicator something is going wrong), then the Xbox store app launched, showing me the Reign of the Warlock DLC (which of course I’ve already purchased) .

When I pressed B to return to the previous app, it loaded me into a Normal difficulty game. I saved and quit, started a new game and Hell was pre-selected, and it loaded a Hell difficulty game - but now of course, I’ve lost all my maps again.

This issue is weird and very frustrating. When is someone going to acknowledge it?
