I don’t think Diablo 3 had the same feeling like d1 and d2 had. When i played d2 for the first time,it was a really scary atmosphere. D3, on the other hand, was just too dark what made it almost funny. Something can also be made so sinister that it is ridiculed…I hope d4 becomes more like d2.
Sound is important to. Sometimes rain or just silence is more creepy than a dramatic backroundmusic.
I think it’s good that they removed the dmg numbers from d4. You just experience the graphics better and please don’t overdo it. D4 is supposed to be dark but not gothic style. Greetings
idk, I liked the atmosphere of d3, but I HATED this big numbers crap. I absolutely hate d3 because of that alone, otherwise I like d3…I like the sucubus of d3 and d1, not d2 lol…but big numbers flashy nonsense where you are never good enough just made me quit d3 after I got tired of the same old nonsense of never being good enough.
The atmosphere should be super dark, but there should be brightness in some monsters. Nothing more intimidating than some glowing monstrosity coming at you in a dark room.
Personally I want D4 as dark as D2R with better signature lighting for monsters like said above. Dark but properly lit up by occasional lights or good monster auras. Everything in D3 is way too blown out.
D3 had blown out numbers for everything too. Hitting for 1.2trillion, like come on. Feels like pandering to children who think bigger numbers are cooler but they become meaninglessly big numbers to me. I end up just looking to see if it was a M or B or T at the end of the number.
Because of the way D4 looks right now, I actually think this may be the first time D2 fans may be able to move on to a new Diablo game and call it home.
That’s my hope, that it feels like it continued with the knowledge from D3 but the feel and atmosphere of D2.
I’m afraid it will end up being a speed game like d3 but maybe they have crafted enough mechanics to make it less of a sprint and more of a marathon.
Edit: to clarify mostly I hate running from screen to screen just causing screen sized explosions killing everything…d2 does have that but d3 takes it to a new level.
I do not enjoy cow level D2R when the sun goes down. It’s literally too dark as is a lot of act 1. Blizz has to remember that a 20 yr old game now has people 50 and higher playing it and well, our eyes aren’t so good. I don’t mind dark if there’s good contrast or lit/glowing items of interest. Otherwise, an option to turn off light cycles would be nice. The darker caves and dungeons are fine. It’s the dark on that gray green grass of act 1 maps with brown chests. Makes it very hard to click on stuff and it serves no purpose. Nothing scary in cow level. It’s just annoying. Straining isn’t the same as mood and anticipation. Less of the former and more of the latter would be great.
the darkness might be swinging back a little too hard. at least plain brightness-wise. i´m not particularly looking forward to being in that environment with that bloated witch.
darkness is not the only thing that creates the horror atmosphere. monster design is a big one. realistic monsters that dont look like WoW meets quasimodo (im looking at those 10m tall goatmen from the footage we got), over the top flashy animations that just look silly and childish (the way the rogue shots her bow (seriously, has no one ever seen a bowman shoot his bow?) super duper flashy teleport attacks that remind me more of dragonball Z’s powercreep. horror elements in storytelling (d1’s poem for the halls of the blind), tragic elements (farnhams story is just heartbreaking). simply changing the color palette and toning down lighting would NOT make WoW a horror arpg.
Im gonna be brutally honest.
I lost all hope for D4 after hearing this developer interview.
Summarizing it up, nothing innovative “player customization” only for your looks of your character but only limited build options (only within your class character), probably bad/bland itemization (hunting specific item slots in specific areas) and they just cross their fingers that PVP will be what keeps ppl playing the game.
They just focus on the combat (very action-paced) and everything else looks too casual friendly.
No real endgame besides “extra quests” for rewards.
It’s going to be d3 darker with more blood and that.
It’s closer to d3 then d2. There will never be a real d3 or 4 because the guys that made those and that time period is gone. It’s never coming back
It’s the equivalent of throwing on 80s stuff and reliving the 80s. It’s never going to be the 80s again all those people changed that time won’t be back
I hope they tone down some of the monster sizes… to me this takes away some of the seriousness of the game. I mean think about it, what monsters in d1 and d2 were super gigantic (other than the end boss/act bosses)? It just feels weird to see a Fallen Shaman standing super huge.
To me, what made the original 2 games dark and scary, was not every thing felt exaggerated. I hope d4 tones down the exaggerations, including combat… I think there is something really dark about simplistic. An arrow hitting an enemy without all the flash, just a jerk, and a thud, and an arrow sticking out of the chest. Feels much more satisfying to me (d2 strafe is one of my favorite bow skills).
rather if they just dont make D4 at all
diablo 3 was bad
diablo immortal takes what 10k$ to play?
wtf is diablo 4 going to need?
my first born child and myself sold into slavery? wouldnt surprize me with how bad activision / blizzard is these days.
Definitely agree. D4 is repeating some of d3 art mistakes. I don’t want to argue to know if d4’s glass if half full or half empty. Some things are excellent, some that are not should be talked about. D4 Selection screen has problems, and its crucial because it sets the mood.
Let’s compare :
d4 : https://i.ibb.co/fp455Pb/d4.png
d3 : https://i.ibb.co/JdkDNyV/d3.jpg
They share the same defects. Is is only a difference of degree with d3. When you make trees unwelcoming, pushing all the sliders and a huge moon right from the start gives less room to surprise the audience. It is too high fantasy.
Whereas some of the players new to the franchise would not necessarily know D2 (non lod and very core of D2) classic theme, but take a loot at the scenery and the ambiance:
Note that the music is the trick for the ambiance, one does not have to rely on a visual “wow factor” to make create an atmosphere.
Look at how the characters, their fantasy an uniqueness pop out more when the world is believable and ordinary as opposed to extra-ordinary. In d2, the world look ordinary, yet very diverse. This ordinary world is the key to surprise the player with arcane sanctuary or the Pandemonium fortress (but still a fantasy compatible with the idea of how people imagine evilness in the middle age). A believable world keeps the player emotionally connected.
d1/d2 has a difference of nature with d3 and d4 selection screen.
This is my suggestion test https://i.ibb.co/HtQ3y5P/Campfire-lessfantasy3.png
I added neutral trees, and tried to keep the painted artstyle approach.
This scene is so crucial because easy mistakes to correct have a huge impact on the mindset of the designers in my opinion.
