Just read some comments on facebook in regard to newest D4 quarterly development. And people blasting game left and right.
So earlier this year, Blizz posted quarterly update with all these weird rune word requirements ‘if/then’. This is not what runewords and runes were about from D2. Thats for a start.
Now what I see Blizz is making last minute changes such as adding +skills to items but its only to hide fundamental problems with the game. When I see that scripted narrow corridors ambush events, it boils my blood. Whats the point of that??? These monsters never dropped ANYTHING! Still cartoonsish D3 clone graphics, even D2R looks better, more mature, darker, setting the mood perfectly.
aRPG are all about wide, vast open areas with hordes of monsters coming your way and even bigger skill tree to tailor your gameplay. Your way. But if you go through comments on facebook people say Blizz creates some sort of illusion that you got a choice to make something unique but many people think its just a smokescreen.
I am yet to find out if the items are soulbound like in failed D3 project.
And in all fariness I am not sure why I am wasting my time on this post when I am not even going to play D4. I guess I just want to voice my opinion since we live in democracy right.
Well I have no doubt. D4 will never repeat D3 sales number, sales which were only build on D2 success. If people knew what they getting themselves into they wouldn’t bother. Shame really because Blizz for some reason still pursuing that casual fanbase when people just want something in depth, something they can invest time and reap benefits afterwards.
I guess not this time.

I mean. Visually it looks pretty good. The mechanics and game play will be more akin to D3.
That’s why they released d2r, to make the d2 crowd happy. Since d4 will be a spiritual successor to d3.
The lighting effects and death animations do look pretty good imo though. Not sure what you didn’t like about that. As for tight corridors go, you ever been in the maggot lair before?

The animations are good indeed, what bothers me however its cartoonish graphics. Bulky bodies like from well cartoons.
In regard to corridors yea ok, you got some in D2 but they are filled randomly with mobs with varying density and overall in D2 you have a feel that you can always expect something to drop. I never had this feeling in D3 especially from scripted events.
IDK I mean who expected different. It’s the same people that made d3 it’s going to have a similar style. It looks good for what it is, but two artists will never play the same song so it’s silly to expect that. There will never be another diablo like the first two. Those people aren’t doing it now
I think d4 has more depth already with those paragon boards
But anyway myself I would rather expect D4 - D2 style than D4 - D3 style. And I think most people would also.

I don’t trust Blizzard to develop a decent ARPG ever since the LoD team left some 20 years ago. Between then and now the only real ARPG references came from other development studios: Titan Quest, Grim Dawn, Torchlight, Path of Exile.
I’m not even looking at D4 development because I know it will be another April fools joke
on anyone who… well, is fool enough to buy it.

Another thing that bothers me is constant patches with new gear out. Let me tell you this; I rather farm/grind years to get something big, but something that won’t be replaced. At least I know the time I invested will be there to stay and I won’t have to jump back after break to keep up with new stuff. Unlike with D3 where you have to constantly play because ever 3 months there is new gear coming out.
I feel like this is something alot of players can relate to, and why the familiarity of d2 was appreciated. I could come back after a year and it would be the same.
It’s one of the things that kept me away from WoW.
Agree about everything but the visuals, where I think they’re nailing It (talking about 3D art, cause 2D art also reminds to D3).
Everything else, I share the same opinion.
yep exactly this, ARPGs are about big open spaces like the maggot layer, arcane sanctuary, ancient tunnels, sewers, all of the caves in act 1 of d2.

so basically you didn’t play d2 until it went to maintenance mode, hate to break it to you but that isn’t what d2 was.
I played from launch. I’m specifically talking about the 15 year period after 1.10. I remember what it was like prior to that. But there’s a reason people stuck around so long after it. And kept coming back.
I honestly laugh at people criticizing the game for looking and playing like D3. D3 graphics and gameplay are great people just like hating for the sake of it, most of D3 problems are in the systems and not on the technical aspects of the game.
I wonder why Reaper of Souls sold amazingly well years after the D2 players claimed D3 was a failure and D3 only had any success because of them.

but they didn’t… the player base dwindled and was replaced by a few people/companies botting.
also they had a content/balance patch in 2005 and another balance patch in 2010 which is 10 years after the game came out… I don’t mind if they stop supporting d2r in 10 years though i do hope they will support it for longer.
d4 better be at least that long too. i mean look at d3 it has had over 7 and a half years already
I never understood this as some sort of golden excuse from people that don’t like D3.
Have you seen the monsters from D1 and D2?? They are very “Bulky and Cartoons” as well.
Skills buttons similar to MOBA’s (League of Legends and Dota)
Itemization similar to Korean grind MMO’s (flat dmg / armor increase and nothing else)
It’s like they’re trying to pander to a certain group of players…
The problem is this is not the Blizzard of Diablo 1 and Diablo 2/LoD but the Blizzard of Activision, so all of their design choices are to appeal to the broadest and shallowest base possible, siphon as much money out of the product as they can, and move on. Actually making a great game, immaculately crafted and designed, isn’t the goal for modern Blizzard. Making the most money with the least effort possible, is.

LoL not sure you played d1 or d2 but they were buggy messes at release and even though d1 gets tons of love because it was the first of it’s kind the design choices are pretty messed up too, who makes a mob you can literally never catch up to.
Also duping in d1 is as easy as timing your clicks.
