Devastating mistake, character ruined, but could have been prevented easily

My highest lvl character is a lvl 57 Bowazon. I don’t play religiously, so to me this is a very high level. I went to reset my stats, and thought by holding shift it would add 5-10 at a time. Not sure why i did this… I think in D3 it was possible to ad 5-10 stats at time. Dunno, but that’s what I did and i’m not blaming anyone but myself. Instead of 5-10 at a time, it put all stats into strength… that was my last reset too. Sooooooo countless hours of work is negated by pressing shift and a click, what if it was an accident? I think there should be some safeguards against this. Maybe only when you dump ALL your stats using shift. That character is ruined now and i don’t even want to play anymore.

It’s probably worth an “are you sure” prompt…

The key you’re looking for is ctrl
THat will do 5 at a time.
Shift is “all remaining points.” Which some people do after the finish with one stat.

It’s an advanced function, they’re not going to add are you sures for that.
You can respec once per difficulty level. Just switch difficulties and use your second respec. It’s not permanently ruined.

That said: You really shouldn’t get attached to a single character. People play hardcore and die 50 levels in all the time, and you can’t play the character at all anymore after that. A Diablo II character is not an extension of your soul.

that means i have to finish on nm and im currently only on act 3. dont think i can do it with those stat allocations

Respec is granted by Den of Evil in act 1
You already have it.
If you have not respec’d twice, you should have one in Normal or NM, whichever one you didn’t use it in.

You know you can switch difficulty any time right? You can still go back to normal after opening NM

Also after all three free respecs are used, you can get more by collecting certain drops from bosses and combining them in the cube. They aren’t common though, sadly.

This applies to all other quest rewards too you know. Every quest can be completed and reward claimed once in each difficulty level.

Some funny posts here. International

Buy a token. Problem solved.

In the 3hrs since I replied;
Found a “twisted essence of suffering” laying on the ground in a “free” game.
Farmed a “charged essence of hatred”.
Farmed a “festering essence of destruction”
and, was holding onto a “burning essence of terror”
Bam, another token.

My magic find is a whopping 61%.
Sometimes we get lucky

make a public game named “need token trading” and wait in it for someone to solve your problem. hopefully you have something to trade them.

dont mind all these other toxic posters offering ZERO help. I’m a helpful person, maybe someday i’ll get green mvp for being a good poster.

Level 57 with countless hours…?
Um… you need to get more efficient. I’m fairly sure anything under level 60 is achievable in less than a day.

I’ll be honest. I’ve never seen any of these items drop. If they did, they were picked up so fast i couldnt see them.

With some rushing you can definitely do 60+ in a day.

However, some people just play by themselves, and only here and there. There’s nothing wrong with not rushing. But in this case, they clearly were in NM but had only used one respec, which means they have one available in the other difficulty they didn’t use it in.

wooh! damn, got my 7 laughs in…was this ladder or nl?

Ive done this before on a solo offline character before. It certainly does stink. I’m now super paranoid when respecing for this reason.

thats why you farm for them lol, in pub games you quest and get exp…in priv games you hunt for particular items of interest

I mean how many hundreds of baal runs have I done and never seen one? They have to be pretty rare imo.

I don’t know how many runs I’ve done of each location, I don’t keep track… public it’s likely over 100… but as noted above, those games are for experience gain. I’ve never seen them drop in public games either. Guess I’m too slow.
Solo/Private games, again I don’t keep track, but it’s been many… definitely over 50… and likely approaching 100…
Farming 2 in one 3hr sitting, that’s a first for me.
It is not rare to see them laying on the ground on free games tho. And it’s pretty typical that folks will trade one color for another. So, if you’ve gotten good at one location you can load up with one color, and go trade for the others.
Keys as well.
I’ve been in free games where people are tossing out runes from as high as Dol down…
One mans trash…

Honestly, the shift allocation for all remaining stat points could use a confirmation dialogue box since it’s final (future respecs notwithstanding). Remember, CTRL and Shift are literally next to each other and believe it or not, remembering which does what with your stat points isn’t always easy for people depending on how they memorize things. Even I have to stop and think about it before I hold down either key when allocating points.

Or the devs could, I dunno, update the UI to be more modern like virtually every other game out there and add a Confirm button to the stat pane to force a player to finalize their allocation in a (somewhat) safer manner, allowing them to cancel out of an allocation that they screw up. The little details really make things much more pleasant in the end. We don’t necessarily need our hands held, but a modernized safety net to prevent oopsies is always a welcome feature when implemented in a non-intrusive manner.
