When will D2R be allowed to be moddable for private servers for mods such as PoD or Median XL and the like?
Thanks.

Unfortunately the answer is most likely never.
With DRM being “the norm” these days, Blizzard is holding onto their intellectual property with an iron fist. Allowing full mods with private server capabilities blasts the door wide open for pirating the game.
Like TDJ said the chance of official multiplayer mod support for D2R is basically nil.
Blizzard removed TCP/IP before D2R launched for “security reasons” after the Tech Alpha debacle, unfortunately TCP/IP would’ve been the only method to play modded multiplayer because Open Bnet was never going to happen in a modern Blizz game.
Really sucks cause the option of modded multiplayer would be great for D2R just as it was for original D2, just gotta wait for workarounds.
TBH I’m rather okay with it. The community isn’t all that large these days regardless, and splitting it 3-4 ways would just kill it faster. I also hated the mod servers tbh. They always did the same crap. Nerf teleport/enigma/BO, create some super cheesy builds, which everyone ended up playing over the normal ones, and add D3’s end game.
End of the day mod support would just make it a worse game for me personally, so by default I’d have to be anti mod support.
That’s your opinion. shrug
Some of us like the idea of playing the game with a few tweaks… like not playing the game for years and never finding a soj or a jah or a ber or a zod.
Modded servers outside of bnet allow players to enjoy the game to the fullest. If anything, release the overlay mod for games like median-xl or pod to utilize for their already existing mods.
What was the tech alpha debacle?
I can’t believe Blizz dropped tcp-ip.
Blizzard is such trash for this.
Hackers made short work of the tech alpha release, gutted the DRM, unlocked all of the acts/difficulties and pirated it as a full game release… Months before Blizzard officially released the game.
So what you’re saying is …they screwed up their own security out of the gate and are too lazy to fix it–instead deciding to cut everyone else out as punishment.
Additionally, you’re saying that there’s a release out there that if I could get a hold of, I could mod my own private game, and have the graphics of d2r.
hmm.
I don’t get it.
Diablo 2 is 20+ years old. Take the $20 win for d2r re release of the only good diablo title ever and shut it [blizzard].
Freaking execs. “I WURN MAHR MORNEIS” and “FURHK THU GERMORZ”
We can thank activision for buying blizzard and ruining everything. We can thank blizzard for nuking blizzard north to start with.
I understand why they made the decision, because if they did release the game with TCP/IP, the full release of the game would once again have been hacked, gutted and pirated. Anyone could then download and play the game multiplayer for free.
It’s their IP, they can do whatever they want with it. We can get upset about this or that, but it really doesn’t matter what we think or say. The consumer (you and I) has the power to not buy their games if we don’t like the company/how they handle their games.
I understand it too—but aside from the overlay, they have to have already made their money off of it and then some given how much everyone considers D2 to be “The Diablo Game That Doesn’t Suck Terribly.”
Literally the only thing wrong with Diablo 2 at all at this point is “drop rates f’ng suck.” Specifically for runes.
And you know what? They do. They do suck. They always have. Its difficult to get the builds you want.
Great, another “drop rates suck” person…
OK, so go play another game where drop rates don’t suck. Go play another game that meets your instant gratification requirements.
This is a loot grind ARPG… It wouldn’t be much of a loot grind if all of the uber gear dropped like rain, now would it?
Ever stop and think that maybe this game isn’t for you??? No, because you’re too busy drooling too much over the cookie cutter builds that say a shako, nigma and infinity are REQUIRED to play the game.
Ever stop and think WHY you continue to play the game? It’s because you are addicted to wanting to find those hard to find items. You’re after the dopamine hit when you find something that you know has a 1/12,000,000 chance of dropping from X monster in Y area. Now, substantially increase the drop rates, and that same feeling of finding the same item from X monster in Y area happens more often… And eventually your brain becomes numb to that dopamine hit when those previously hard to find uber items become more trivial to find. It’s not as exciting any more. Play Diablo 3 for a little while, you’ll see what I mean.
You don’t like the game, yet you punish yourself by continuing to play it.
Hell Unleashed was the best of them all imo.
Very few ways to solo it, (unless you are Pious).
Loot friendly, and very challenging.
The current version is a very pale shadow of itself.
They promised, and actually HAVE added more functionality to modding. Yet they outright gutted any possibility of playing your modded version with anyone…ever.
You’ve been playing the wrong mods. There are different mods that PoD and PD2.
And if so many mods do the same thing (like nerfing Teleport/Enigma), this means that the community agrees with that and it should be applied to D2R as well.
This is a tired old argument. There is never a question of whether a game will be pirated. It’s a question of when. You’ve been around long enough to know better. Anti-piracy measures are about Day 0 release. The reason the non-Blizzard bnet servers were taken down a long time ago like bnetd was because of legal action. And that really only works inside the United States. The United States doesn’t have jurisdiction in other countries. Companies like Epic and ID Software realized this was an exercise in futility. Blizzard is a little slow. Because of this we will never know the creativity that would have emerged from embracing modding. I used to play a lot of Unreal Tournament on servers where you had like one shot skills with only sniper rifle or rocket explosions with dramatically increased radius. So much fun. Forcing everyone to play the game one way is lame. I get that on “official” servers you would have one experience but why force everyone to play on those? I think if you take a look at the gaming landscape, Blizzard has taken an unpopular stance here. Modding tends to be more embraced than not. Heck, the only reason I still play this game at all in single player is because D2RMM exists.
No it means that two people do.
Hell D4 has had a P-Server for a while now.
there is no such thing as pirating diablo 2 since everyone has already bought the game at least once in their lives lol, some probably bought it 10-20 times
dont put it on the internet if you dont want it to be spread to the world for free
d4 is not even worth trying to play for free lol
Jesus christ. These spoiled brats are everywhere. Can you please not ruin the only game with the concept of chase items?
If you really want an SoJ that is like 50-60 hours of farming andariel on nightmare…
You could even make a classic sorc and farm it then convert to xpac and give your main the ring.
I would really like a mod which allows me to use legacy SFX instead the remastered SFX while using the new graphics. I suggested that they added a “Legacy Audio” mode where old sound effects are used with the new graphics, but they ignored this. As a result I can’t play D2:R, because certain important sounds are unbearable. Two new sounds which are offending me are: NPC dialogue selection sound and opening of town portal sound. When you select conversation options there is tiny sound effect which has a MUCH higher pitch in D2:R and it hurts my ears every single time I hear this. Town portal sound has some damn sparks added and those sparks “drill” into my ears every single time. I hate those high pitch sound “details” added in the Resurrected SFX.
The game is mod friendly but the reason it’s not talked about on the forums is because it may or may not go against guidelines. It’s technically hacking game files. Which isn’t allowed.
There is a community modding D2r and there is a legacy hd item pack which uses legacy models instead of resurrected. But I don’t think it can be talked about here I certainly don’t want to tempt fate.
I would love mod servers but I know it’s not going to happen. Starcraft and WCIII had staying power because of community driven creativity.
