IF Blizzard brought a trade platform to the game to make it easier for us to trade items, we’re going to need some sort of “currency” to work with. In game gold is out of the question, because even the maximum amount we can carry is basically worthless. Yeah, runes and items work well, and could still be used for the trade platform, however I feel that a more monetary “token” of some kind is needed. For it to work, that token must have some property that makes it desirable to trade items for.
Here are my thoughts:
The “currency” would be in the form of a consumable “token”, which can be both upgraded and traded.
1x “xptoken1x” earned for every cumulative hour of active play. Earned tokens are obtained though an in-game item mail system or special tab accessible through the stash.
Active play means slaying monsters, not while AFK in town/shopping/trading, or AFK camping in an area where the monsters are cleared. I figure a grace period of 10 seconds after slaying a monster would be counted as “active”.
- 1x “xptoken1x” can be consumed for a 20 minute boost of +1% XP.
- 5x “xptoken1x” can be cubed to create “xptoken3x”, which when consumed will grant a 20 minute boost of +3% XP.
- 5x “xptoken3x” can be cubed to create “xptoken10x”, which when consumed will grant a 20 minute boost of +10% XP.
Here the XP tokens can be converted to magic find tokens:
- Cube 1x “xptoken1x” + Magic ring or amulet with any% magic find = 1x “MFtoken1x”, which when used will grant a 20 minute boost of +10% magic find.
- Cube 1x “xptoken3x” + Magic ring or amulet with any% magic find = 1x “MFtoken3x”, which when used will grant a 20 minute boost of +30% magic find.
- Cube 1x “xptoken10x” + Magic ring or amulet with any% magic find = 1x “MFtoken10x”, which when used will grant a 20 minute boost of +100% magic find.
Tokens are stackable up to 20. You can only have one XP or MF boost active at any time. Any active boost timers keep running even when not playing, so the boost can carry between games.

There are lots of currencies ingame.
Runes, items, charms, … perfectly fine as it is.

I think you are on a creative idea train… But I still feel, keep it simple, is the best move.
Take away all hatred for JSP, their FG currency is the best thing for trading. Make it D2R only, non-RMT, resets to a min amount, every ladder if thats really the best case for the game and still allow a bank for Non-Ladder purchases, and I am so confident it will thrive.
Runes, Gems, ect are great and plentiful, but sometimes you just want to make a fast trade, to the first person, regardless of time of day or what items they may or may not have, for some FG to use for other trades, at any time.

Those are not currency, those are items to trade for other items.
Perfect currency. Runes, p gems…all you need.
Platforms are only needed to connect player trades, should not try to operate any kind of currency, a trade is just some item for some other item. Ingame items.
Of course that’s the mission of lobby and chat rooms, but it is so outdated people need the discords and such.

Unless you cant find someone with those items at the time you want to make a trade…
This is Diablo2, not Amazon.
It is OKAY not to have everything right now.
For me, this is part of game.
Thats subjective, you play or trade how you want, with limited stash currently and the whole idea of early ladder trading, is to cash in at max value asap, trading “right now” as you put it, is a very important aspect.
My follow up question though, isnt these token idea more of an, upgrade item in the game, vs a currency? Just curious
Well, it’s both. Being able to upgrade them and use them for a short XP or MF boost gives them the value. Without any value, they’d be pointless to acquire.

An item for item trade platform would be great. Too bad bliz can’t even program a chat interface let alone a trading platform.
Hmm fair, adds an element where you have to find your currency or earn the enhancement of it, with in game play and dedication…
That would solve the whole, where does the currency come from early into a new ladder season, IF it resets every single season, debate.
Well there already is, its just not that great “in game” and there are aton of third party item for item sites, but only one third party site with a currency option.
The idea is for the trade platform to function as both… The currency idea just throws another item into the mix. Currency for items, items for currency, items for items… The currency is an item, it’s just more monetary.
However, people are going to always want XP and magic find, so I feel the tokens would hold their value well.

I support that the game should have a “fixed” currency. Honestly, runes are runes…items are items…gems are gems…SoJ are SoJ…etc. These things are only considered currency because the players themselves have done so.

If this were to happen, you’d have two camps… One camp would rarely give up their tokens because they want to put them to use, they’d be trading their items to others just to acquire more tokens. This camp would be the smaller of the two, they will be the ones who play the game a lot more and will be the ones who are wanting to rise to the top of the ladder as fast as possible.
The other camp, those who don’t care as much about extra XP or MF and are willing to trade their tokens for items. This camp would be the larger of the two, being more casual/relaxed on their play, not as worried about reaching the top of the ladder.
And of course there’d be a grey area in between.
Getting the trade channel would work wonders.

Trade channels come with their own set of “issues”… Chat rolling with hundreds of players doing the following for example just to draw attention:
Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/— ISO PERF ANNI /w gamertag —/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z/Z
Then of course any chat scraping bots can log the gamertags to spam players to death with whisper messages.

Perhaps, but not such much in a regional hardcore ladder. But your point is worthy of consideration.
