im playing solo online… and im in ACT 2 already… i died a couple of times… and continue playing… then i notice that i lost around 120k… dying is expensive in online games?.. if i remember correctly… dying in D2:LOD is not that expensive… is this correct or i did something wrong?.. one week of 2-3 hours playing every day… grinding then it was lost everything just a couple of death?.. thanks…
Its normal when your gold is not in youre stash…
the death penalty is only 2.5% exp if you manage to pick up your corpse which is basically nothing
edit:
and gold is irrelevant in this game anyway
Keep gold in shared stashes. Just wait until your follow gets to level 60+ and dies… Oof.
gold is not irrelevant. it’s doesn’t have trade value
good luck rezzing your merc with pleases and thank yous.
good luck gambling with IOUs
late game this usually isnt an issue, though therr are times you just throw your merc at a boss and the rez costs add up. but in norm it comes up and can be an annoying hinderence
gambling is only viable when your char is 91+ lvl, and you don’t really need it if you managed to get that far
You also don’t need a merc unless you have eth thresher with infinity + andy and that assa armor runeword at least, and if you have that, it won’t die anyway
tl dr: git gud
It can be, yes. Here is the Arreat Summit article on how death works. You will want to read not only the gold part, but experience and corpse claiming.

One tip is to keep your gold in your stash, or better your Shared Stash where the death penalty does not touch it. Just transfer it to your Personal Stash when you need to repair, rez a merc, or gamble.
you do realize is is possible to have fun in this game without worrying about viability and following 20 years of meta?
but i welcome alternate viewpoints. hug me.
For some reason death takes gold from your personal stash and not the shared stash so if you have a mil in stash and 10k on you it can take more gold. I may be wrong but it used to take only from gold on you and not stash or maybe its a bug, like cain wont identify items in the cube
edit i have been playing pluggy most of the years its consider singe playyer and single player wont touch the gold from stash so i was remembering it wrong but right lol
Because that is how the game is supposed to work.
From the article I linked. This is the original D2 Guide page.
If you are killed, your character will lose a percentage of the total gold both carried and stored in the Stash. This percentage is equal to your character’s level but will not exceed 20%. After this ‘death penalty’ is deducted, the rest of the gold your character was carrying falls to the ground in a pile. If the penalty exceeds the amount of gold you were carrying, the remainder of the penalty is deducted from your Stash. In Single Player, dying will not take away all your gold. No gold is lost from your Stash, and 500 gold per character level is exempt from the death penalty. For example, if a 10th level Single-Player character with 5,000 gold dies, he will lose no gold.
I can offer coffee and apple pie! Coffee and pie for everyone!
Wait til OP hears what the cost of death is on hardcore.
I think is your sanity depending how rich your char is
yOu Do rEaLize lmao, go back on twitter or wherever you came from
oh. you’re insufferable. noted. even use that super cool and hip capstwist text for empahasis.
guess I’m not getting that hug.
lol twitter. never once.
that was a trend?
and I demanded that hug! asking for a hug makes me look pensive.
i’d rather hug that miss cheetah chick, maybe even buy her a drink and something more
Wow… Thanks for the response… That explained… i always put my gold in my stash… i puckup everything… portal… sell it… then come back… this how i grind for gold and soecial or rare item…
So in online games death deduct also from stash 20%… But in offline almost no deduction on death…
I will put my gold to my shared from now on… Thanks…
There are also items that sell for 20-30k gold. Tressiled armors, demon hide gear, etc.
when your level 90+ and you die, you arent gonna be thinking of your gold. Its gonna be the past 3 hours of Baal runs down the drain from the XP loss you recieve.
maybe
Apparently you have never needed to upgrade your magic boots / gloves / belt to something at least rare or better. I spent about 300k gold fairly early on (level 20ish) to snag some rares because all I had was junk.
