Diablo 2 online to offline permanent character conversion is missing and has been requested various places so many times. Pointless argument about “cheating” doesn’t exist when permanent (not reversible).
This can’t be a technical problem since it existed in the underlaying original D2 made decades ago. Why it’s missing in D2-Resurected? It would allow players to enhance ladder character and enjoy their time investment much more and show Blizzard has a respect for customer-gamer’s time.
The ability to download online characters for offline play has been requested for many years both in the original game and D2:R. Sadly it’s never become a reality.
Not all is lost, as we can still do this is job manually by recording the items and character stats, then recreate them using character editors. A PITA to do, but still possible.
Maybe I’m missing something obvious, so this is a serious question, not being snarky, but as long as it’s a 1 way trip (no way to re-upload) then how would being able to have an offline copy of your character for SP only use open up the door to cheating online?
Obviously if you could download it, then hero edit it, then re-upload it, yeah cheat-fest, but I don’t think that’s what anyone here is asking for. If the online character stays on Bnet and unaltered, I don’t see how it introduces cheating to online which is the only place it matters?
I don’t see how the online character getting deleted as part of that copy/transfer really changes anything in terms of cheating.
Yeah I mean technically items are getting “duped” since they would appear in both places, but there’s no way to really profit from that online so long as the transfer is all one way, and the “duped” items are regulated to offline only where creating items is already a thing.
Offline is already a “you do you”. I just see it as a QoL for people who want to change over to SP Offline but don’t want to painstakingly copy every stat in order to hero-edit their legit characters “legitimately” without completely starting over from scratch.
I know people already use hero editor offline to test setups, are you just concerned this would make it too easy for people to test alternate setups without investing the time into finding/trading for items online to test? Since people already use hero editor for that offline, I again see it as QoL vs. any sort of cheating, but YMMV, and as I said in the beginning, maybe there’s something obvious I’m just missing?
As long as servers are working fine I don’t need it that much but if someday for whatever reason they decide to shut them down then this feature is a must.
Your online char owns 100 unIDed annis. You download your char without your online char being deleted. You ID all the annis on your offline copy and now know exactly their stats. You use this info to ID only the really good ones online and make money with it. The bad ones you sell unIDed and also profit from it, your buyers hope to get lucky but they only get subpar annis.
Good point especially for ladder characters. This potential advantage could be circumvented by excluding unidentified items from the character export. Also, you must be not playing the game for a small period of time, say 5 minutes, just to avoid packet sniffing/dropping/client-server re-unid’ing shenanigans.
