Cut Lore from D1 (Tremaine the Priest, hellforge)

I’ll never look at D1 the same again. There was way too much cut content from the game. Tremaine the priest tied a lot of the religious lore together and introduced the hell forge with a demon boss and his sword (which made an appearance in D2; and in its current state is most likely a trash unique weapon - DEVS!!!)

What an epic character. Watch on x2 speed if you’re short on time.

Diablo turned kid friendly when Blizzard started aiming towards a broader market. The original Diablo had child sacrifices. No matter how much blood, gore, lighting effects, creepy sounds, jump scares and booming voices you fill your game with, if it doesn’t create a moral dilemma other than, “We gunna save da wurld!” then you’ve failed making a Diablo game.

I’m not talking about tragedies that go “according to plan”, like a kids dad dying, or a town being overrun by zombies. These things are expected, and your mind is steeled for them. Diablo had things that were truly horrifying, and didn’t “subvert expectations” as so many bad plot writers use as a cop-out, but “embraced your worst fears” with excellent storyline.

Now you may say, the original Diablo didn’t really have much of a storyline. Maybe not in the conventional sense, but the mood of depression and hopelessness in the town’s voice actors and actresses was palpable. The bleakness of being under the cathedral was only usurped by the fear of dying, and that bleakness quickly surfaced once back in town.

Well said. Even the gameplay has changed a lot. For example in Diablo Immortal they have the boss charge up for 3 seconds as everyone repositions themselves for safety. It takes away from immersion of the monster brutally trying kill you (such as duriel being locked onto you 24/7 (also where is his charge-in attack? - DEVS!!!)

I’m curious if this quest was removed due to the religious factors/talks of exorcism. I like that he mentions that he fears the cathedral has been turned into a gateway to hell. I always found it very “sudden” that you casually poof into hell (I don’t remember if Cain mentions anything about it).

That’s true. When I spectated Diablo Immortal on streams, when I see Charsi and Cain handing out quests, all I hear is a bunch of voice actors reading out lines for a random quest that will give you items. Compare that to D1, I’m fascinated just listening to Farham’s opinions on the things going on in town. I don’t give a damn if he gives me an item or quest, I feel like I’m living in that world.

Also Tremaine gave a bigger importance to “The Cloaked/Dark Riders” and made them a lot more relevant. Was this ever touched on in D2?

I noticed D4 has Tristram as a significant location on the map, if they don’t have The Cloaked Riders in that area, that would not be very good!

I’d like to use a particular Kreiger (from Archer) gif in [a positive] response to this post, but I’d get tagged for side-stepping the profanity filter with a gif.

Np! I’m still in disbelief that they took this out of the game. He appears in the late game, right after you come out of the caves and the literal hell mouth opens. He is the one that is supposed to give the Hell levels their significance.

Blizzard, make sure you put all of this cut content in the Diablo 1 remake.

Here fixed it for you.
