Curses and Shrines must be co-exist

I got EXP shrine. and hapyy … But I got Cursed and be angry.

it’s a game, maybe try not to be angry over such little things.

When things like that happen, it sucks, but it’s not the end of the world.

Often times it’s avoidable with game knowledge though. Get an XP shrine in Chaos? Save it for Diablo b/c you know you’ll be getting cursed a lot. Other areas like WSK or the caves in Act 5 that have a high chance to spawn enemies that curse, same deal.

Sometimes you get a unique enemy that spawns cursed and there’s a lot less you can do, but that’s part of the game.

It’s also frustrating that some things like taunt over-write curses, but changing it is a bit too much for a remaster IMO, and would likely introduce power creep. Probably helps melee more than casters though, and they are already behind, so may not actually power creep.

Overall it’s a part of the game and helps add layers of complexity which experienced players may enjoy, and we don’t get any support anyway, so I don’t expect something like this to change.

Nah lets not make game easier
It is part of a skill to try keep the shrine

One thing that is a bummer, is if you have fade, your shrine will go away pretty quickly. Is it also the case with cleansing? Can’t remember…

Cleansing reduces Poison + Curse Duration while healing you passively via Prayer synergy. Fade raises your Resistance(Physical and Elemental) and reduces Curse duration(no effect on Poison duration). With respect to Shrines, they both shorten the duration so yeah… watch it on those. Clerics(FoH Paladins with Plague + natural Meditation) are a double edged sword in this scenario as they’re great healers but are a “curse” when it comes to Shrines.

Cleansing doesn’t reduce shrine duration, it uses a different function than Fade does. You can test it yourself, even level 1 Cleansing would greatly reduce the duration of a shrine since it applies the curse length reduction every 2 seconds when it pulses.

Let’s take a stamina shrine for example, it lasts 192 seconds. One pulse of level 1 Cleansing (39% curse length reduction) would reduce that to 192 * .61 = ~117 seconds, a second pulse would reduce it to 115 * .61 = ~70 seconds, etc. You’ll see that the shrine lasts the full 192 seconds regardless of having Cleansing active the entire time.

As for the OP it does suck when a curse overrides your tasty XP shrine, but like insidious says I think it adds a layer of strategy and also allows the opposite to happen; using a shrine to clear a curse. It’s a lot of these little interactions that make D2 well, D2.

If Cleansing doesn’t reduce Shrine duration, then Arreat Summit is blatantly lying when on the Skills page it explicitly says Cleansing reduces Shrine duration. Not that the page hasn’t been updated in like 20+ years but still the fact that the official page says that it does means something in my book. Even other sites that I’ve looked at on the matter say that it does too so either they’re wrong or they, like me, believed Arreat Summit to be correct.

Yeah, this is one of those few times where Arreat is incorrect. Some other inaccuracies I know off the top of my head is that it says Fury is uninterruptible when it isn’t and rare armor can roll 31-40% fire resist which it can’t.

Other sites often use Arreat as a source yes, I think part of it is this is one of those common misconceptions that gets passed around until people take it to be proven and true.

There’s no “if” about it though, Cleansing doesn’t reduce shrine duration. Feel free to test it, shouldn’t take more than a minute to hop on a paladin, find a shrine, and run Cleansing.

Cleansing was fixed in a D2R patch and arreat is not updated for D2R

Fade still removes shrines very quickly

This is false, just tested it in 1.00, 1.07, 1.09, and 1.13c of original D2 and it doesn’t reduce shrine duration in those patches either.

An experience shrine lasted the full 144 seconds in 1.00, stamina shrine lasted the full 192 seconds in 1.07, experience shrine lasted the full 144 seconds in 1.09, mana recharge shrine lasted the full 96 seconds in 1.13c with a level 1 Cleansing active the entire time, including before shrine activation.

I won’t test every little patch but I think this is enough for the major ones, I think it’s a safe assumption that Cleansing never reduced shrine duration in any patch of D2.

It was a bug in old bnet and it reduced the shrine length. There were also notes about the fix in D2R

Interesting, do share those notes.

Eh… This would interrupt my current habit of saving shrines as curse removal tools in Hell difficulty.

If shrines did not remove curses and instead coexisted with curses, shrines would lose a function they currently have.

You don’t know what you have until it’s gone… It’s a double edged sword.

Yeah, there’s the Cure helm runeword for merc, which synergizes very nicely with a Prayer merc wielding Insight. At higher levels it’s like you’re constantly quaffing a health potion.
