Crash during starting app and playing

My app of D2R keeps crashing at starting game also during some playing.

When I run the app, after clicking play, in the loading screen nothing happened, keeps a dark screen and then a message apear that saying, “an unexpected error has occurred and the game had to close”, I need to do many attempts more to play a little, but when I finally playing, after using a TP or a scroll for town the game crashing and the same legend appear…

My laptop is in his latest version, drivers and controller up to day, here is my computer

ASUS TUF Gaming FTS
Processor 11th Gen Intel Core i5
Ram 8GB
System type 64 bit
Windows 11

Hey there,

So I was able to find the crash reports for your game client and each of the 17 crashes point to something with the GPU and Directx 12.

This indicates a potential driver issue though there could also be some client corruption or even interference from other programs on the system.

The core crashes are all Access Violation Crashes. Meaning the game requested access to read/write data to a specific system resource and was blocked by Windows

The following steps may help but we may need more information about your setup than can be securely provided via public forums.

I would like you to perform a clean install of your drivers by completely removing the old drivers as follows:

  1. Let’s remove the old drivers via a program called DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller): Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) Download & Support - Wagnardsoft Forum and choose the first announcement post.

  2. Click “Official Download Here” then open the downloaded file. It will ask you to extract to a specific folder. This is usually going to be the same folder the file was downloaded to (“Downloads” for most people)

  3. Open the folder created and double click on “Display Driver Uninstaller”. It may ask for permission under User Account Control. Select Yes.

  4. It will pop up a screen saying, “This seems to be the first time you launch DDU, Let’s look at the options.” Click Ok, Leave the options set as now and click ok. A second pop up warning you that you are not in safe mode will pop up. That is ok for now. Click Ok.

  5. Select Device Type: GPU and then under Select Device choose AMD, Intel or Nvidia. (If you have multiple brands of GPU you will need to run through this process twice.)

  6. Choose Clean and Restart. Let the system reboot and you should be on the default microsoft GPU drivers. Visit the following link to get the proper drivers for your GPU(s):

For the Nvidia GPU: {NVIDIA}

Let’s reset the in game user options:

  1. Right click Windows Start, Open File Explorer
  2. Navigate to C:\Users'Windows User Name’\Saved Games\Diablo II Resurrected
  3. Delete the Settings.json file
  4. Empty the Recycle Bin.

We will want to run the repair tool on the game client: Blizzard Support - Repairing Battle.net Games

Try running your system in selective startup mode: https://battle.net/support/article/200483

Create a new administrator account: Blizzard Support - Creating a New Administrator Account

Once the account is created, shut down the computer, wait 60 seconds, restart, log into the new profile and try the app/client.

If that doesn’t solve the issue, then I recommend submitting a ticket with an msinfo attached for further investigation. (instructions for collecting that msinfo report will be on the form.)

Click your name at the top right of this page, click support, click contact support.

Great advice! Im thinking I might have a very similar problem and I would like to hear what you think. Might I post relevant data i.e. my system info and the like?

The problem was solved!

Thanks too much, i only did the drivers update

I can play again

Didn’t work for me.
Crashed at character selection and I can’t even lower fps or graphic settings… I’m now in a vicious endless cycle.

I got the same problem. I did a clean install of battlenet and D2R and the game crashes when I enter the main character selection screen, or when I click on play, or right after I enter the map (the rare cases that I manage to login).
My windows is updated, nvidia drivers updated, tried installing in a regular ssd and in the nvme disk, but the problems stays. Sometime I got the error report popup and sent it to blizzard, but most of the time there was no popup. Also, sometimes the game just crashes to destop and sometimes it freezes the screen. No BSOD by Windows.
Don’t know what to do. The last night was working, now doesn’t. I just uninstalled it.

[edit]
I also tried to run the cmd commands that check and repair windows file system problems, but things stay the same. And there was no error in the system.

Reinstalled drivers with ddu in safe mode, nothing changed, even tried to install old drivers once. Reinstalling Battle.net, D2R, windows 10 through usb without loosing files, cleaning registry, disabling MPO, disabling audio devices, AV and firewall disabled when installing and launching, and added exceptions, updating BIOS and chipset driver, launching battle.net and game as admin and disabling fullscreen optimizations, cleaning and replugging most pc components and cables all doesnt help. Game used to work fine for few hours, then crashed once in first act. After relaunching it started crashing after few seconds of playing. Now it crashes right after connecting to battle.net in game. I can see screen artifacts for split second in form of few small colored rectangles just as the game is opening, and when crashing also. Could be gpu driver and game biting each other, while windows update stirs it up. Other games are running fine on my 6800XT with no noticable problems. Dxdiag points to DWM and D2R.exe I dont think i can do anything else except wait for patches from both blizzard and AMD to help things out. I dont want to format whole pc just to try if one game will work.

Fix this damn game, it still crashes. It’s impossible to play. I tried everything and it’s not funny having to reinstall game and gpu drivers. Now I’m using nvidia game ready driver 535.98. I tried also the studio version and the two previous driver builds.
It keeps crashing when I enter the character selection menù or right after I join a game.
