Controller Schema

If this is not already implemented or possible. I suggest a customizable controller schema that allows the RBT and LBT as function keys.

Note: I don’t know if the Blizzard developers implemented a Diablo 3 style inventory management, a Diablo 1 style inventory management like they had on the PS1, or a combination of the two. (I prefer D1 style because it looks and feels amazing, but my controller schema assumes they implemented D3 style due to efficiency?)

Controller Scheme for Diablo II: Resurrected

*I’m imagining the Microsoft Xbox controller for reference, for Sony PlayStation and Nintendo Switch players, use your imagination.

A = Left Attack/Interact/Confirm
B = Right Attack/Interact/Cancel
Y = Use TP Scroll/Tome
X = Use ID Scroll/Tome
Start = Game Menu/Pause
Select = Action Menu (Can Bind to D-Pad)
LT = HP Pot
RT = Mana Pot
D-Pad(Up) = Swap to Skill 1
D-Pad(Down) = Swap to Skill 2
D-Pad(Left) = Swap to Skill 3
D-Pad(Right) = Swap to Skill 4
LBT = Function 1 when held down
RBT = Function 2 when held down

When LBT is held down (Function 1)

A = Mercenary Toggle
B = Character Sheet
Y = Skill Tree
X = Quest Log
Start = Game Menu/Pause
Select = Action Menu (Can Bind to D-Pad)
LT = HP Pot for Mercenary
RT = RV Pot
D-Pad(Up) = Swap to Skill 5
D-Pad(Down) = Swap to Skill 6
D-Pad(Left) = Swap to Skill 7
D-Pad(Right) = Swap to Skill 8

When RBT is held down (Function 2)

A = Mercenary Toggle
B = Character Sheet
Y = Skill Tree
X = Quest Log
Start = Game Menu/Pause
Select = Action Menu (Can Bind to D-Pad)
LT = HP Pot for Mercenary
RT = RV Pot
D-Pad(Up) = Swap to Skill 9
D-Pad(Down) = Swap to Skill 10
D-Pad(Left) = Swap to Skill 11
D-Pad(Right) = Swap to Skill 12

Very good. See this is why I think gaming companies should hire people as volunteers if they have a good idea or a passion for a particular thing.

I always feel it’s a shame when developers commit to controller support but don’t allow for detailed combinations like this. Simply defaulting to the controllers face value often seems the go to, even worse when simple combinations on keyboard don’t exist (ctrl+1 for example). Even if this kind of schematics isn’t implemented, I’d love to have the freedom to map our own keybinds like this. I don’t completely agree with every decision made here, but I think it’s a great start anyway.

That looks like trying to function as a mouse and keyboard. Also ignores belt system. Skills will be single click usage on controller with optional single press rebinds on m&k. They already stated inventory management will be same as D2, no lists like in D3.

The belt system MUST be ignored when using a controller because you’d need to mouse over your belt or an open inventory using the thumbsticks and click on a potion while in combat. That’s would very clunky and everyone would use a KBM. Even D1 on PS1 didn’t make you do that and it did have a nearly identical system to the PC version of D1. As for the skills being single click, you’d never be able to use 12 skills like that.

What are you going on about? Did you not watch the Alpha footage? The belt hotkeys on controller are the d-pad buttons, 4 directional input keys for 4 belt slots. D2 on Mouse and Keyboard uses two skills at a time set to the right and left clicks. Hotkeys simply switch which skills are on which click. On the controller, you will have 6 active skill buttons and can switch to another 6 active skills at the press of a button. Keyboard and mouse is getting some system similar to this for D2R for single click activation.

Face buttons and two trigger buttons for active skillset, another trigger button to switch skillsets, dpad for belt, L3 to run

I completely agree with you and I don’t expect everyone to use the same schema as me. haha.

I do like the idea of single click skills, but the only comparable and plausible way to use 12 skills in that manner is with function buttons.

That’s absolutely terribad. KBM for the win.

Edit: I guess that is good the way they have it setup, it’ll be very awkward at first.

Diablo 3 already has established schema with a controller, and D2Rs is just a modified version of it with some additional functions. Even the current head of the Diablo franchise admits he enjoyed D3 more on a controller. I had to reread your loadout from above, and imo, your idea is a load more clunky, as all it does is function as a left click and right click of a mouse (which, was what some of us thought originally was going to happen after reveal, as they stated that they were going to keep it close to mouse and keyboard or something to that degree). They would also have to rewrite mechanics not just for console, but for PC to adapt to having a dedicated slot for health, mana, and scrolls, not to mention that your method ignores stamina pots and antidotes.

The only clunky thing about controllers will be inventory management, especially in multiplayer dealing with loot and charms.

**Addendum, just seen your edit as I was about to hit reply.

True , Diablo 3 is way much funnier with a controller , than a mouse and clicking none stop.

Also being able to take it portably is another factor that I must admit really trills me to have D2R on my switch handhelm.
