Clowns running D2R

5 days still no communications from buzzard about servers disconnecting constantly

The Internet would be wonderful for all if we could all just get along…

The vast majority of the time, random disconnects are not Blizzards fault. People that don’t know a lot about how computers, networks or the internet works automatically assign the blame on Blizzard. If Blizzard was the sole owner of all ISP’s, internet backbones, basically the entirety of the world internet outside of the players home/business network, then yes, any disconnection problem would be Blizzards fault. But that isn’t the case. If Blizzard was indeed the source of random disconnections, then everyone would be experiencing the issue, and they wouldn’t take too long to post a notification on the Battle.net launcher.

Diablo 2 has always been notoriously bad with connections that have any amount of packet loss. Even 1% packet loss will eventually result in being dropped from the game. “Your connection has been interrupted.” Excessively high ping jitter can also cause the problem.

Both packet loss and excessive ping jitter can be caused by a large number of issues that can affect any point between the players computer and Blizzards servers… Faulty hardware, DDoS attacks, ISP’s who oversubscribe their available bandwidth, which causes traffic congestion. It can also be something with the local network… WIFI connections are inherently lossy due to signal interference. Also using any wireless internet source such as cellular or satellite can also be lossy.

Could they do something to help D2:R be more tolerable to packet loss? Yes, they could… The simplest thing they could do would be to double or even triple the data stream and set them out of phase from each other, which would offer redundancy to help fill in the gaps from dropped packets, at the cost of a small amount of additional lag. Will they do something about it? I highly doubt it, because that would involve them reworking both the client and server side handling of the network code, and of course extensive testing… Too much work for no-money-making D2:R.

World wide DDoS attacks are a huge bane to the stability of the internet. As I mentioned above, if we could all just get along, the web would be better for everyone.

ive only been playing online for 15 years not long i know but i use cable to avoid problems with wifi or satelite and i can check my ping and after buzzard wonderful update it started also im not the only one having connection problems

Been completely addicted over the weekend with about 12 hours daily and not a single disconnect on ladder.

I have stable connection also. But some people on EU complaing in lobby chat.
