Was playing a bunch last night with a friend, got through normal, and all of my characters are gone completely, i made a bunch for mules/name holding as well that i didn’t even play on and those are gone too.

Ditto. Just tried to get on and a whole bag of empty. Wasted time and broken dreams. Where has all the rum gone? (dramatic music) Yeah, no characters, meh.
Same here. Online characters are missing.
All my characters have disappeared as well
Same here in EU region, all gone.
At least they are communicating what is going on very well.

Never buy a Blizzard game when it first comes out if you expect it not to screw you over in some way with their horrible launches.
They are trying to fix it, don’t worry your characters should come back. It happened to mine aswell.
char was recovered just now
This just happened to me as well, I saved and exited and (after some delay) when the character screen reappeared my character was gone. Logged off and back on without any effect.
Luckily I only had one character and have only lost maybe 4-5 hours of work but I’m still not happy. Yet more Blizzard mishaps at an application launch.
Same problem, my sorceress online just disappeared. Cannot play this way.

That is the issue many people like me have been having with ours for nearly a half of day now. We haven’t been able to play…
I played 6 - 8 hours last night into Act II. Logged in just now, character is now missing. Americas region.
Hope Blizzard gets their stuff together soon…
So were mine this morning. This is normally a display issue where the char list does not populate correctly.
You can force the char list to populate by making a new char (diff name or it will tell you one already exists). That forces the char list to populate again for you. You can delete the extra when you have your chars back.
That did resolve it this morning. Or, you can wait and they will eventually be back.
