Did all the characters get older along with the game and were aging in real-time? And all of them got fatter?
They all need some serious remodelling.
IMO looks like the 3d artist has a thing for this bulky/squarish body types… Or is biased towards it.
Amazon looks just ridiculous. She is a man now. Or a female barb dunno.
Assa was changed to Asian assa but still alright.
Necro is very old but kinda okay.
Barb is now a beer drinking ex-bodybuilder. No more steroids.
Paladin’s got an afro and a significant tan. Also >100 lbs, maybe too much fast-food.
Sorc imo looks older but still kinda ok.
Druid looks like an old homeless drug addict. Was he smoking crack the last 20 years since D2 LOD? Also >100 lbs.
Seriously, most of the classes on the selection screen look kinda weird and offputting to me. At least sorc resembles herself. All the others look strange, out of place, like imported from a different game…
I know, character selection menu is not a big part of the game and has nothing to do with gameplay, however it is still an important part of the game. Character design and looks are important for player base, you can see people buying skins or customizing the look of chars by items.
It won’t be an issue in game with the view from above, but looking at these portraits on the title screen/beginning is kind of an issue…
Not to mention that these are the artwork presented in promo materials.
Cant we have female characters that are more feminine and male that are more manly and muscular (and not FAT)? It’s just a fantasy arpg.

Looks great imo. Amazon looks like Julius Caesar a bit, but I like everything they’ve done overall. You can nitpick everything, but let’s be real: This is F-ing Awesome.
i mean, i agree some of the chars looks strange, necro does seem way older, and amazon… yeah… she looks like she is 56… your pic is perfect.

Sorceress, Paladin, Necromancer and Assassin look very good imo.
Druid and Barb don’t exactly look bad, but somehow different from how I imagined them.
The Amazon looks perfect armor and body wise, but the face looks completely different from all the old D2 concept art stuff we have seen.
It’s not that it wouldn’t somehow work for an Amazon, it’s just that it doesn’t work for this Amazon, because so many people seem to have imagined a different picture of her.
Just get Amazon, Barb and Druid a bit closer to the originals and it is on point.
(The Sorceress might need a tiny bit more of an oriental touch, but that is probably just me being nitpicky)
druid and zon are the worst… zons face is terrible, and druid… well i loved the OP’s description. its felt on point… i think necro is the onyl one thats done “perfectly”. they all feel “wider”
If they say they want to keep the remaster “as close as possible to the original”…
Improvements are obviosly needed due to the new 3d graphics, but I see no reason to change the appearance of the classes to these bulky, wide, old, tired characters they show now.
Why not try to keep the looks closer to the original artwork? Yeah, the old ones are far from perfect, but they have a very much different vibe to them.
A good description, OP. The characters look just jaded and bored, not fierce or full of energy like they should.
Looking like an old band that decided to reunite after 20 years and do a “goodbye” tour before retiring, no offense to band who do it, just saying it’s not the same energy from the career beginning.
Since this isn’t a remake that advanced in time, but a remaster that is trying to keep as close as possible to the original D2, this approach to hero design is not ideal IMHO.
Hero designs should be close to the original designs - just give them some more rendering detail that wasn’t possible back then.
All the Characters are well made but most don’t look anything like their original self. The changes made to Assassin is extreme and they are not staying true to the old design. The original wasn’t Asian, so the remaster shouldn’t be neither. The notion that only Asain people can martial arts is an ugly stereotype. I expect them to redo her or the 1:1 is a fat lie.
