I was leveling a bowazon (just for the fun of it, because the damage… meh) and there was this one time in which I ran out of arrows while using the unique bow Raven Claw, so I picked a random bolt quiver from the ground expecting to keep shooting at everything that moved. But D2R didn’t allowed me to equip it, even having that bow a stat that allows the use of Arrow or Bolt quivers. Whenever I try to equip a Bolt quiver, it just displays a red background and doesn’t let me use it.
IIRC, there was not much around it in original D2, just equip bolts like you would equip arrows.
Some Wikis claim it can shoot Bolts too, but according to the original documentation (Arreat Summit), it can only shoot arrows, as you just found out.
Well, must be an in-game description error then (that comes from a long time ago)
Kind of confusing if the description “Fires explosive arrows or bolts” means “if this is a bow, it fires explosive arrows, if it’s a crossbow, explosive bolts” as in “we used the same description for both”
Nvm, would be nice if it becomes a bit more clear
NO. It does NOT allow you to use a Quiver of Arrows or a Quiver of Bolts. And it DOES NOT say that.
This is NOT a bug.
For Your Information
- Bows can ONLY equip and fire ARROWS.
- Crossbows can ONLY equip and fire BOLTS.
Fires Explosive Arrows or Bolts is a generic (Missile Weapon) Affix (or Property).

The Amazon Basin Wiki/Diablo II/Basics/Fires Explosive Arrows or Bolts
Fires Explosive Arrows or Bolts replaces arrows or bolts with Exploding Arrows when a standard Attack is used: it does not do so when any other attack skill is used.
- An Amazon who has invested points in Fire Arrow will apply its synergy bonus when using them.
- When Rogue Scout uses these weapons, explosions may be displayed but they apply no damage.
