Can someone explain Rune base to me please?

I thought rune bases couldn’t have additional blue effects like life or additional skills? I thought a socket item had to have a grey title with no blue effects, or you could roll a white base also with no blue effects.

But then I saw this guys “War scepter” with a grey name, however it has +3 to conviction and fist of the heaven plus it was made into a “Call to Arms”… So base items can have plus to skills ontop of being made into rune word soon long as weapon name “War scepter” for example is grey or rolled? Am I getting that right? And can you buy one of those scepters at the merchant or can you only find that base playing through the game?

I’m still very new to rune words, I apologise if I’m wasting anyone’s time

Some class items can have what are called “staff mods”. A scepter can have up to +3 to up to 3 paladin skills, while still being white or grey. For example, you might find one with +1 conviction, or +2 redemption, or one with +3 redemption & +3 vengence & +3 holy shock.

The one you mentioned would be very rare, and expensive to trade for.

FYI, some of the other items with staff mods are: Barbarian primal helms, Druid pelts, Paladin shields, scepters, wands, Necromancer shrunken heads, staves and Sorceress orbs, Amazon specific bows and javelins, and Assassin claws. These each have different mods that can roll.

There are some “superior” white items which can also have extra affixes. For instance I just found a Superior white Monarch with self repair and extra block rate. The problem with these “superior” items is that you cannot socket them in the cube, only Larzuk can but I am not sure if I want to waste my socket quest on this shield for instance. But if you find something white like this and want to, you can add sockets to it by Larzuk, which will make them also bases for runewords since they will become grey.

The important thing you need to remember is that, if you want to make a runeword, the first thing you need to check is if the item is GREY.

If it is GREY it can be used as a base for a runeword. It is possible to have extra attributes.
Then you check for the number of sockets and if the base is right for the runeword you want to make

Everything you need to know is here:

For Runewords you need a WHITE or GREY item.

If you find a superior base item without sockets, only Larzuk (Act V Quest) can socket it, but ONLY the max. Sockets the item can get.
