Can Normal/Nightmare Ancients be preserved?

I’ve heard a rumor about Ancients being preservable.

If I’m at Act 5 and I have not completed the Baal kill quest, but I join a game and Baal is killed and get credit, does that preserve Ancients, or is it auto-completed?

And if Ancients are preserved, can I do it at any time to get an instant level-up, or is the level-up exp/level capped?

I’d like to know because me and some friends are going to strategize around this gimmick if it can be abused, for the next ladder. We’re thinking of getting one guy to 90-91 and then have him burn his Ancients to insta-level to 93 for crafting. We could also wait til he’s 93 and use it to boost him to 95.

In any case, wondering if these kinds of things are possible.

Correct me if I’m wrong on this. I heard that this is how people are getting level 1’s to Hell difficulty.

Edit: Won’t be saving Hell Ancients because it would lock out Hell Baal runs, which are the best for leveling quickly.

the only way it is “preserved” is 2 options.

  1. you play a character in non-expansion, get him to hell, convert character to expansion and your ancients will be unused
  2. you play a character in expansion, have someone who can complete the baals quest (as in they’ve done ancients and can enter throne room) finish the quest for you while you are partied with him which will allow you to get to the next difficulty level without having to use your ancients.

but my question to you is why? if you were thinking this would help with leveling up, then I’m sorry to disappoint that this is not a good tactic. norm/nightmare ancients does not give much experience to anyone above 80. It doesn’t give you a full level like it normally does when you are 20 or 40 respectively. hell ancients can give you a bit of experience but I doubt you’re going to wait until 90 to use it, generally you pop it right away so you can join baal runs asap…

Ancients give a flat amount of experience, not an entire level. They give enough experience to instant level you at the respected levels people typically do them at (20/40/60) but experience requirements go wayyyyy up later on, so your idea wouldn’t work.

But yes, this is how people get level 1’s into hell. I play two accounts and rush my alt account and will look for games that say “baal for quest” or “help with ancients” or something similar so i can park my level 1 in there and use my main account to do the quest for them, bumping my level 1 to the next difficulty

We were thinking of a strategy to try to save us from doing 40-90 additional Baal runs to reach higher levels for gambling and crafting, especially for the gambling.

I remember when I started getting +2 to class skill gambles at 88, so we were going to get a character to 93 (minimum) and pool resources before gambling and crafting

Yeah I figured as much, I just wanted confirmation and 2 people have confirmed that its flat exp and not an entire level.

It has been hard to tell because I always thought Ancients was absolutely mandatory to get Baal kill credit. I didn’t realize it was optional in the first place until I heard the rumors.

well if we’re being technical, then yes it is mandatory for the person actually completing the quest but the way d2 works is as long as you are partied with someone who can properly complete the quest, everyone else gets the quest completion. the only quest that doesn’t give completion to everyone else is ancients because it is the only quest which has a level check. but it doesn’t matter for folks who are just trying to skip the difficulty being under leveled as long as one person who has officially gotten ancients quest gets the baal quest complete. the person killing the stuff can be lvl 99.
