Can Dragon Talon Spawn on Sin Claws?

Google says it can for ilvl 25+ on nm or higher claws. Maxroll seems to show its possible as a gear option. Traderie has a few claws with dragon talon listed however they also have impossible items listed. I tried to google image search and haven’t been able to find a pair. Arreat Summit doesnt say anything about them not being able to spawn. Just looking to confirm if there are sin claws that can spawn with 1-3 dragon talon, if not is it by design or a bug?

The following Claws cannot spawn with Staff Mods: Katar, Wrist Blade, Hatchet Hands, Cestus, Claws, Blade Talons, Scissors Katar, Quhab, Wrist Spike, Fascia

Not on a white item; the only way to obtain those skills on a claw is to use the 6x p skull cube recipe on a rare exceptional/elite and drop its item level with each roll until it’s ilvl 24 or below, and then get super lucky to get the skill during reroll, before the recipe drops the item lvl to low. But even then the possible other affixes become trash, so I personally don’t see how it can be worth while to attempt

For the claws that can spawn this skill, like runic talons, can they inherently spawn with Dragon talon? I have not seen evidence that this is the case.

For TastySouP Do you have a source? Where can I confirm this is the only way to get Dragon Talon on a set of claws?

Selecting Prefixes/Suffixes in drops from Monsters
When picking Prefixes and Suffixes, it will, among those that can occur on the specific base item being created, randomly choose from all those that has a:
qlvl<=ilvl+2.
The ilvl is defined as the Monster Level for monsters. Fan sites typically have listings of monster levels.

Quality Level - Qlvl is an integer given to all items. This integer is primarily used for separating items into groups known as “Treasure Classes”. It is also used in the formula that determines the affix level of an item. The determination of an item drop will also use this number to verify if the drop is successful.

so basically due to how all these things interact, the earliest you can find a white or rare Hand Scythe is Act 1 Blood Moor Nightmare:

All monsters in the Nightmare Bloor Moor are level 36, so from what we learned in section 2, means they produce ilvl 36 items. And from section 1 we learned that the ilvl needs to be less than 25 for it to be capable of having Dragon Talon, so this means its not possible for the Hand Scythe to spawn with dragon talon, it’s ilvl is too high.

There’s no way to reduce the ilvl of white items, so it’s not possible to get a white claw with those skills, but that’s where the horadric cube recipe comes in with rare items only:

6 Perfect Skulls + 1 Rare Item = 1 Random Low Quality Rare Item of the same type
You can use this formula to get another chance at a Rare Item of the same type.
ilvl = int(.4 * clvl) + int(.4 * ilvl) Player level matters.

int means make the result of the brackets an integer value, rounded down, and clvl means character level

so we could technically use this recipe on a rare hand scythe (or better claw), and reduce the ilvl of it. So prior we learned the lowest ilvl you can get is 36, and we could roll with a lvl 1 char so we would get:
new ilvl
= int(.4 * clvl) + int(.4 * ilvl)
= int(0.4 * 1) + int(0.4 * 36)
= 0 + 14
= 14 ilvl

using this recipe would result in a ilvl 14 rare Hand Scythe, meaning it is now <ilvl 25 and has a chance to roll dragon talon.

If you used the same item again you would get:
= int(0.4 * 1) + int(0.4 * 14)
= 0 + 5
= 5 ilvl

You could also do something similar with the imbue quest:

The imbue quest can not be used by a char with a level lower than 8.
The imbue quest sets the ilvl to character level plus four. In equation form:
clvl + 4 = ilvl

So if you took a char from lvl 8-20, and imbued a white exceptional/elite claw of any type, it will result in a rare exceptional/elite claw with an ilvl of 12→24. Meaning it has a chance to roll Dragon Talon, but not guaranteed. You could use this claw with the Cube Recipe, mentioned prior, to keep rerolling it.

TastySouP Thank you this is the perfect explanation I was looking for. One other side question I have regarding this topic. Originally I was theory crafting a build with Mosiac’s and 3 to Dragon Talon. Would the below theoretically work?

Low-quality Weapon ( Crude Runic Talons) + Eld Rune + Chipped Gem (any type) = Runic Talon

Creates a Normal Quality Weapon out of a Low-quality Weapon (i.e. Crude Runic Talon) and sets the iLVL = 1 regardless of the base item’s iLVL. Any Item properties are removed (re-rolled).

Since it is rerolled can you take any crude Runic talons and with this recipe potentially roll a 3 dragon talon in a Runic Talon? To where you could then socket quest it and get 3 to create Mosaics?

no, because ilvl 1 claws have max socket of 2, so cant create mosaic

but you dont want +dragon talon anyway, you want the smallest amount of kicks possible, around 4-5 kicks max. dragon talon is a one point wonder. runic also kind of unnecessary

short answer… no
it is impossible to get + tiger strike or dragon talon on claw that dropped.

long answer

its “technically” possible to get a 2 socket white one or a magic or rare one, via cube recipes or charsi immune, using certain cube recipe… but doing in a way that allows this mod also prevents that same item from reaching 3 sockets

so unless your doing VLLD and REALLY want that +3.

it is absolutely impossible via any legitimate means to get a +3 to talon or tiger strike and also have 3 sockets

but like it was stated earlier… u dont want +dragon talon on mosaic

you want phoenix strike, and claws of thunder, and blades of ice.

which means you need a ilvl 91 claws or higher and pray you get the 10% chance to roll 3 mods

yes there is, if an item item drops low quality a cube formula can reduce it to 1, by making it no longer low quality white item

Confirmed, I was able to test this using hero editor and the eld, chipped gem, and crude hand scythe combined to get a normal hand scythe with +2 dragon talon.

The socketed max based on ilvl is also true where max it would roll is 2 and therefore ineligible for Mosaic runeword… sadly

While I appreciate your feedback SwiftKitten and Kabryxis about not wanting Dragon Talon, my theory crafted builds currently hold 2 separate world records for fastest Uber Kills which Coooley broke on stream on bnet.

So respectfully, wanting or not wanting this mod is kind of a… beauty in the eye of the beholder situation… and has multiple applications when considering speed challenges, LLD or just theory crafting/testing for the love of D2R.

well, if its a non-meta build for a very specific niche purpose, go for it. you don’t see many people theorycrafting builds for very extreme specifics, and even fewer who don’t have a strong grasp of the d2 “logic” while doing such theorycrafting, so it was easier to assume you’re just making a general mosaicsin. outside of uber bosses, monsters die in 2 kicks, which forces you to stand still more than necessary with very little benefit. its why 4-5 max kicks is recommended as a “general purpose” mosaicsin.

Wanted to share some summary findings for anyone interested…

Only Hand Scythe (qlvl 41) and higher can spawn with staff mods
The below cannot naturally spawn on dropped sin claws due to the ilvl cap of 25 (Tier 1) and ilvl 37 (Tier 2)
Level 1 (Tier 1 - Fire Blast, Claw Mastery, Psychic Hammer, Tiger Strike, Dragon Talon)
Level 6 (Tier 2 - Shock web, Blade Sentinel, Burst of Speed, Fists of Fire, Dragon Claw)

If these skills are needed, these can be created/rolled using an imbue quest of a character lvl 8-20 (still using Hand Scythe and higher) or the Cube recipe of Eld Rune, chipped gem, and low quality Hand Scythe or higher base.

For rolling, there is a 30% chance to get no skills, 40% to get 1 skill, 20% to get 2 skills and 10% to get 3 Skills. If a skill is rolled there is an 80% chance it will be a Tier 1 Skill and a 20% chance it will be a Tier 2 Skill. Once Skill is selected there is a 60% chance it will be +1 to the Skill, 30% chance it will be +2, and 10% chance it will be +3.

If using for LLD (low level dueling / PvP at lvl 30) it is important to note that the cube recipe will set the ilvl of the Hand Scythe (only claws with lvl 30 or under that can spawn with mods) to ilvl 1, meaning any claw base can have a max of 2 sockets. For LLD this would only allow the Strength runeword (35% Enhanced Damage, 25% Chance Of Crushing Blow, 7% Life Stolen Per Hit, +2 To Mana After Each Kill, +20 To Strength, +10 To Vitality). Alternatively you can use jewels, runes, or gems under lvl 30. Otherwise you may want to consider using the Charsi imbue quest to get a rare item that can spawn additional helpful mods.

For non-LLD the only other runeword would be Wind (Sur and El) if you needed Tier 1 or 2 skills on the base.

Anyone can confirm blade sentinel can’t spawn on white gt/runic/suw or ss?

To get +3 bs / +3 bf and make plague.

Confirmed, Level 1 and 6 skills cannot naturally spawn on sin claws, however you can “make” claws with only Level 1 and 6 skills. This would limit the item to a max of 2 sockets where plague is not an option.

I do believe a +3 bf is possible on its own for plague
