Bug & Possible Hidden Rune Drop Nerfed in new Patch?

We all know about the all cap character name bug. Is it even a bug or is it intentional? But all cap words are less readable. If it’s the latter, D2R developer had better got a good reason for the change. Also, all key bindings go back to default upon exiting the game and has to be set every time you start D2R. This is incredibly annoying.

Finally, just wanna compare note. I’ve been farming cow for a few days pre-patch. I know all about statistics and randomness in general. I’ve been tracking rune drop rates using excel, counting everything drop in moo moo farm. Pre-patch, the statistics fit with what was known about drop mechanics in general. On average one or two runes drop every game out of maybe a dozen Goods TC drop (meaning jewelry, rings, amulets, gems, and runes), roughly 12% of Goods TC drops will be runes. Most time it’s the usual spirit/insight runes, as ORT is known to have max drop frequency.

So far, nothing unusual about that. Since the patch and the subsequent roll back, I’ve had zero rune drop from cows. I don’t mean any meaningful rune, I mean ALL runes are NOT dropping. I’ve been doing this for a few hours now and thousands of cows have been slaughter. The odds of zero rune drop by chance is vanishingly low. I’m wondering if others notice similar rune drop drought? With hundreds of Goods TC drop, a 12% rune drop chance within Goods TC should give me about a dozen or so by now. Statistically speaking, the probability of 10% event not occurring after 100 trials is around 0.007%.

I also do WSK2/3 and Baal, same deal. For the last few hours or so, I’ve seen no rune drop. Am I just super unlucky or what?

This.

What they did during the maintenance had nothing to do with tweaking drop rates. Item droughts happen. Then you’ll have one game where you’ll swear a rune is dropping every minute to average out the many games where you didn’t see one drop.

Lady Luck works in mysterious ways.

I posted an analysis of 3000 completed Trav runs over in the barb forum. In that analysis, I compare that to 500 cows runs I completed on my sorc. Over 500 runs, I recorded an average 3.8 total runes of all types per run. So your estimate of 1-2 per run is low. 500 runs won’t tell you anything about HR drop chances, but it should get you a pretty good estimate on total runes dropped.

Which only strengthens your point. But we first have to know how many cows runs you’ve done. If you did 25 or more with no runes, then something is almost certainly wrong. If it’s 10 or less, then you probably just had a drought. Somewhere in between, try doing some more runs and see how long the streak continues.

It’s a bug that they are aware of and say they will fix.
They just aren’t going to do anything about it for a few weeks yet; sometime after 2.4 drops on April 14.

100% bugged, I just did 1 Trav run, no runes dropped. This is unacceptable!
