So as many of you have noticed, Blizzard released a statement on the server crashes. Confirming what me and other developers have guessed. They are running D2R on legacy server files with a few adjustments. Admitting the legacy database was having issues making this many read and writes to its global database… especially with the amount of players playing and how they are specifically playing the game. They also admitted to reaching out to third party sources for help. It was actually pretty easy to tell this was the case all along if you paid attention to the responsiveness of the server when it comes to IO in general. Making and creating games had too much delay, teleporting with a sorceress was very lagy during peak outs. Came creations and joining’s had set delays and often crashed. To make matters more interesting they said they would be addressing the problem by limited resources, patching code and make some minor architectural changes. I know some of you here have experiences with databases and migrations as well as updates. We are pretty much playing a 2021 game with 2021 hardware on mid 2000 server code. This is a huge disaster honestly, the fact the entire game was worked so beautifully but they did not rebuild the database from the ground up… effectively updating it to 2021 standards is horrible. There are many aspects of the game that are being negatively effected by this. They don’t need to “patch this up” and add a queue, they need to rebuild the database from the ground up and convert the tables. I really don’t mind having to wait for an update. But this is Blizzard… they should be able to rebuild the server client in well under a week or 2 from the ground up…
