It would be nice if it had more visual or audio feedback to confirm that they’re actually hitting things. Like some kind of impact animation when it deals damage and a better sound effect.
I can’t tell if they’re working and things just kinda fall over, or aren’t taking damage when it really looks like it should have.
If an attack does more than 1/12 of monsters total life in damage, it will cause them to enter hit recovery. So if you see monsters stop when they’re running to you and/or do their hit recovery action, the hammers are hitting.
As far as hitting a monster with hammers up close, get the monster right above you on the left.
Another great way is to kite monsters into your hammers. If you have hammers on your left click, periodically tap shift to force cast hammers as you’re walking/running, Most monsters behind you will be hit by them depending on their position, speed, and how frequently you cast them.
Edit.

Maybe you’re a veteran player and you’re used to it, but the feedback is near non-existant. I beat the game once on normal like 10 years ago so I don’t have that blindspot.
longtime veteran here. also don’t like the fact that blessed hammer has no real feedback like other skills/spells. But as TheDarkJedi pointed out, a great way to tell is when monsters suddenly stop while running around or towards you.
As far as being weak… it is the strongest skill in the game. Once you get pair it with concentration and get a few points into its synergies and +skills with dual spirits (since paladin can use dual spirits before any other class by more than 20 levels) it will hit like a truck and pancake the rest of the game.
Tip: get your A2 mercenary a 4socketed polearm with Ral Tir Tal Sol for “insight”, gives you very very high mana regen to spam hammers. (lvl 27)
Yeah I’ve heard hammer is crazy good, I’m just saying the feeling of hitting things with them is weak. Also that’s a good tip with the mercenary, I’m starting to dread all the mana pot chugging and inventory management.
Yea we all hate mana chugging. Dual spirits (tal thul ort amn) gives MASSIVE mana and then insight makes it so you never run out. And once you have some points in Holy Shield your defense/block is also crazy high. Hammerdin is by far the easiest class/build to pancake the game with. Even with crap gear.
barley anything is immune to hammers in Hell. But there’s a crap ton of fire/ele/cold/psn immunes.
