Looked at the original D2 posts etc. Best place listed was normal cows. Ran that place a bunch and nothing. 1/2 way through act one NM and still nothing. Have all the runes for Insight, but nothing to put them in.
Are you putting sockets into those polearms, or are you waiting for one to drop? You put the sockets into it yourself with Larzuk quest to guarantee 4 sockets.
All grey polearms I’ve seen drop have had sockets in them already, just not 4. Larzuk will only put sockets in something without any sockets.
Yes, this is why you pickup the white polearms and put sockets in them with Larzuk. Don’t farm for grey ones that have sockets in them.
I think normal cows is the best way. I’m searching for it too. 10 cow runs but no luck. Found only a white crystal sword.
A good Strategy is to remove all +mf you have. It’ll increase the chance for whites/sockets
Huh? Everything says you can’t put runewords in white items. It has to be grey.
Yes regular Cow runs. But like a 100 - 1000 runs not 10 runs. Personally I usually find a unique polearm by regular cows and give my merc that to use for awhile. A 4os polearm will drop at some point, although insight is great for chars that go through alot of mana, you can get by without it.

The max sockets of an item depends on two things: The items maximum possible socket count, and where you found the item. (item level)
The Larzuk socket quest will give the maximum number of sockets to the item taking in account the items maximum socket count AND the item level.
So for example if you find a white Poleaxe in Act 2 Normal and use the Larzuk socket quest on it, it will get 3 sockets.
Another thing, using the cube recipe to repair “Cracked” or “Low Quality” items sets the item level to 1 regardless of what it was beforehand, which also affects the max sockets count.
Any white polearm you find in normal cows will be 4 sockets in lazurk quest. I think that is what he means
Not sure where you are getting your info but when you socket an item it turns to grey text because now it is socketed.
Rune Words will only work in Socketed non-magical items. This means that Set Items, Unique Items, or Magic Items with enough Sockets and the proper item type will not allow or convert to Rune Words.

“Only grey-text gear items with sockets can accept Runewords”
Nothing I’ve read on previous original D2 forums say white weapons get turned grey on socketing. That’s news to me.
I’m not going to quote the entire article you linked. But basically the top portion 20 paragraphs at the top explain the socket mechanic.
Runewords only work in non-Magic socketed gear. Magic, Magic Rare, Set, or Unique gear does not work with Runewords
Non-magic socketed gear is not hard to find – normal farming will do it.
You can also add sockets to non-magic gear using various Horadric Cube recipes. However, you cannot add more sockets to an item that already has at least 1 socket; this recipe only works on items that have no sockets.
I’m surprised the article didn’t mention Larzuk quest though and the max amount of sockets he provides.
I understand the socketing mechanic. I’m just stating, nowhere that I’ve looked says a white items turns grey on socketing. Why my post was about finding a grey polearm.
Do you still need help, or are you just being combative?
Huh? I’m not being combative at all. I don’t see how you’re getting that from anything I’ve posted.
Yes, still looking for a grey polearm for insight, as nothing you provided or linked says a white items turns grey, when socketed. Not going to waste my socket quest on something I can’t find any details about.
Played Normal act 1 for an hour and found 2 of those. It’s a bit lucky of course.
If you are really lucky a 4os grey text Polearm drops right in front of you. Don’t hold your breath waiting for that, cause it is very rare. The second way is for a white polearm to drop in front of you and therefore it would need sockets. If you find that polearm in normal cows, it should be guaranteed to get 4os with the Larzuk socket quest. Which you hopefully have not used yet. If you used that socket quest already… Third way is rolling sockets on an item via the Cube recipe. You can lookup the needed items online for that. But you are not guaranteed 4 sockets that way, you might get 2-6 sockets. Good Luck!
Grey items are socketed items, but I don’t know why white items turn grey when I socket them.
Instead of linking a million sites with the definition of a grey item, I will just post the first one that shows up on Google.

By the way, out of the 5 or more people that have answered your question multiple times, not once have you said thank you.
You got the last word, good job. Here is a cat
You’re welcome, good day.
If I got useful info I would. Nothing was provided that I didn’t know. All I got was you with a stuck up attitude.
That’s why I farmed cows looking for one, but as I was trying to explain to the rude person, I can’t find anything online that a white item turns grey when socketing. I guess that’s where my concern and confusion come from.
Its been already stated, White items that used lazurk to give sockets turns the item grey and is runeword VIABLE. I have personally done it multiple times already.
In the above request, Normal Cows give white items that will grant 4OS thru the socket quest. (which are again, runeword viable)
