My merc has some mediocre rare chest piece and he takes a lot of damage… I’m not sure whether to make him a smoke, duress, treachery or idk what else… I don’t have any high runes and i imagine i wont for a while… tried farming the countess a bunch but the best rune she dropped was one pul, tried getting an um for duress or a Lo for fortitude but got nothing. Also what’s a good armor to use for the base? I have a 4os 155 something but something tells me i shouldnt waste the runes on that one.
Treachery. Put it in the first 400+ defense 3 socket armor you find, slap it on your merc, watch him become a god.
You really need to stack life leech with it though. Try to get a tal’s helm / crown of thieves / vamp gaze / andy’s visage if he’s using insight.

Try get him a Shaftstop until you can get something better for him. They should be really easy and cheap to get via trade. Then upgrade it via cube to Boneweave armour instead of Mesh armour for extra defense. Alternatively, a Gladiator’s Bane is not something to scoff at either, but no idea how they are valued nowadays.
Treachery, Duress, smoke, and lionheart are all fine choices IMO.
Lionheart is nice and cheap, gives over 100 hp and 30% all res along with 25 str to get closer to an eth CV. I’d say Treachery or Duress are probably better though if you have the runes for them.
I must have farmed countess 100 times since last night and I know that’s nothing in the realm of D2 farming but still lol no Lo, Um or Lems.
I’ve gotten 3 Ums so far. I actually need some thul runes… She been stingy with the runes I want lol.
First off just shop him the highest Def armor you can. Blue, Gold or Unique doesn’t matter just a high Def.
Treachery or Duress are pretty ‘cheap’ if you can make those go for it. Mercs come with some pretty decent resists in the first place so a high defense rating is important to them. Once you get high def you really want things like fade from Treachery or Crushing Blow from Duress.
i personally like doing :
Life leech Helm (tal helm is pretty easy to get) + Treachery on a ethereal elite armor + Very fast or Fast attacking weapon (from insight base or an unique like tomb reaver for the added mf% , very fast attack and nice resists)
Treachery will allow fade.
And very fast weapon will allow nice Life leech.
Of course you can go fortitude , but it’s much more expensive
