Barbarian story - How to get rich (UPDATE 3)

Hey, i am always trying to find interesting way how to entertain myself in games and i am starting to be little bit bored by playing online so i will do interesting challenge.

I am curious how fast i can get rich or aquire dream equip on Barbarian in online mode. I will be starting from scratch and frequently post updates of my progress. I will be collecting all info about drops, play time, what i did, what equip i use, some tricks and reports from my MF runs.

I want to show that you dont have to start playing Sorceress to get items and maybe this will have use as useful guide to some new players also who struggle with barbarian.

I am not fully decided on my strategy yet i just have few things decided so far to have as rules. I am not going to use JSP. I will be using trade discords and i would also like to try start using traderie and diablo dex or how is it called as places for trading. Begging and getting free will be also viable option to gain items ::grin:. I am basicly trying to use anything legit without involving places with real money.

My build
I will start as double swing and then progress to Berserk barb most likely. It really depends on what i find or trade as i might even stay double swing or frenzy.

I am starting today so i will have probably first update later in the evenening. I will be playing on fresh account, mostly in EU region btw.

as barbarian i recommend going for the goldfind-berserk build and farming hell travincal as early as possible, i could imagine this to be a good way to get rich early.
you can get good high runes there and gamble alot with the gold found

Sure , you don’t have to . You don’t have to do a lot of things in life . Yet , it is still the optimal way of doing it .

If you are just starting , Sorc can farm a **** lot faster than a barb can . Even if we are ignoring the requirement of good gears .

A fresh barb will not have access to teleport or good firepower .

You want to start farming travincal ? You need some gears to start with , you need at least 1 grief and a good rolled Oath . You also need some good resistance with fire and charms to stay alive .

Also the drop rate of high runes like Ber has only changed from " almost impossible " to " quite dang unlikely " even with travincal farms , you aren’t going to find yourself being showered by high runes all of sudden .

If you are just starting out , just get a sorc start farming bosses . You can start as early as NM Andariel and every single SOJ she dropped is going to nett you a LO at least . And she is far more likely to drop an SOJ than any travincal council can drop you a BER .

Things are different than what it was back then in D2 . They had massive SOJ dup issues and blizzard has to make Dclone just to get rid of some of the SOJ . In D2R SOJ actually worth a lot more than SOJ from LOD back then .

I think you missed the part where this is a self imposed challenge where he plans on keeping track of his findings, almost like an open journal for the community.

He’s well aware there are better methods. I’m personally looking forward to hearing about his progress, even if just to sate my curiosity.

Looking forward to the update. I am thinking of only doing 1 char per ladder, especially if they do a short ladder. I hate sorcs so I’m expecting some different farming ‘expectations’ for the different builds.

What’s the trade discord? I’ve been working on traderie, but the group of people on there is limited, always the same sellers, not many buyers.

Hey, first update :slight_smile:

I have to say that great news about new changes and content made me very excited and i am not sure how it will impact this run, but I will keep playing until season starts. But now to my update:

When I got home from job, I logged in and made “please free” game to get some stuff for free while I was doing some work on PC and waiting for food, I kept alt tabbing occasionaly when I did hear something droping on ground so I could to pick it up while eating and watching movie :slight_smile:

Over period of like 35 minutes I aquired some items people gave me. Nothing epic but few useful things definitely. I will list all of it below:

Mostly useless stuff i sold to vendors:
Corpsemourn, The Fetid Sprinkler, Gorefoot, Rite of passage, Sanders superstition, The Centurion, Sanders Riprap, Suicide Branch, Ancients Pledge in dragon shield, Frostburns war gauntlets, Hellplague, Infernal Torch, Stoutnail, Stealth in chaos armor(req strength 130 lol), Rare Bone shield with block and all res, Isenharts case, Infernal sign, Isenhart Lightbrand, Hellmouth, Gorefoot Sharkskin boots (lol upgraded), Angelic amulet, +1 barb skills double leech amulet, Manald heal, dex/str mana leech ar ring for lvl 47, Vidala snare amulet, GC which I identified and it was +4 MF :slight_smile:

Usefull stuff:

  • Suicide Branch
  • Immortal kings Will avenger guard
  • Angelic Halo Rings+Angelic amulet
  • Nightsmoke
  • Aldurs Rhythm
  • Bloodletter
  • Goldwrap

After that I turned off game, finished some work and after that i started playing again. I made “Please free” game again but this time nobody joined. But it didnt bothered me as i did Den of evil and Blood Raven quests and discovered WP in stony field. Then I joined some Tristram runs and leveled up to 12. Then finished act 1 to hire act 2 mercenary. I was lucky to find decent rare spear with life leech for him.

I could not find good act 2 game so I joined act 1 game again with some people and we progressed from Black Marsh to Andariel again and wanted to start act 2 when guy with lvl 91 “LadyLight” sorc joined and asked if we wanted rushed. Of course we did and Ladylight rushed us to act 5 doing all important quests on the way and even did 3 tombs with us. But then i joined some other games to finished leveling to 20.

Next stop: MOO MOO :smiley: . I was grabbing everything like crazy in cow level made by some high level characters. I was able to pick up Shael rune but sadly missed Amn which I would like to have elso. Since I found 2 socket Bone shield on Cows, I made Rhyme in it with Shael i foud before. When I did lvl 25, I started looking for baalruns.

I was lucky to find a good one runned by guess who, LadyLight guy :smiley: , but after fun runs my game crashed and I wasnt able to join again so I tried to find different baalruns. I found some which werent that fast tho. I stopped playing when I did lvl 33. I will continue playing tomorrow.

Update number 2

Hey I have some new info. Yesterday I continued with doing Baalruns on normal and made lvl 44 there and that was right time to start Nightmare. I joined one public game where maker of game wanted to do quests from act 1 to act 5. We were lucky as someone with high character joined and rushed us to Act 5 so I could go Nightmare baalruns right away. Also that guy who made game for some reason throwed away Infernostrides Demonhide boots, which i will definitely use. When we were killing Baal, Chance guards dropped and I was lucky to took them. They were 39% MF.

NM Baalruns
I kept joining NM baalruns but it was litle bit hard to find them as there is not so many games made on NM. I struggled for a while to join the one which were going but were full. When I got in, it was crazy as I was able to pick up Laying of Hands from one baal drop and they are perfect for my build. There was also Ribcracker dropping on one run, but someone else took it. But i had atleast Bartucs claws from same run which previously dropped from baal waves. Nothing for me but maybe I will be able to sell it for something. I ended NM baalruns at lvl 62.

Hell
I am part of trading discord where I asked if someone could rush me and one guy was so nice to rush me on hell for free. Thank you “Isken” :slight_smile:

Hell Baalruns
Thing I did in the evening was joining into games with more players or baalruns. If I had good Baalruns, I was leveling there. If not I kept running Kurast locations and clicking objects. I managed to find plenty of stuff there:

  • Unique etting axe
  • Magic ring +22 mf 18 fire res
  • Runes: Sol, Tal, Thul, Amn, Ort, Io, Lum, Hel
  • Blackoak Luna
  • Traps skiller
  • Goldwrap
  • Small charm with +15 life sc,
  • Small Charm with +15life /17mana

I sold trap skiller for Um and for that I bought Stormshield and skullders. I also bought Stone crusher Legendary Mallet for 12 Perfect gems. I eventualy leveled up to 76 and tried my fist travincal run. Its no good, I cant do it yet. I realized I screwed up my skills and stat distribution as I properly didnt prepare it when i started playing so I will have to sacrifice 1 more respec before I will get Grief.

My biggest issue now is low damage, cannot be frozen and low resistances. I decided that I will copy my Hardcore hybrid build. It is combination of weaker berserk and Double swing as main attack so I am doing respec today.

What is also planned for today? More kurast runs in games with players, Baalruns to make probably lvl 85 and to finish some missing quests to get quests rewards on all 3 difficulty. I also want to find all waypoints. Oh and I will need to buy second weapon as I will be using Double Swing. I was thinking about Horizon tornado, it should not be expensive. Or maybe stormlash. I am not sure how to deal with freezing as I could buy poorly rolled Raven frost ring, but I would rather socket Cham into my Skullder to be honest. Well It depends on my luck today and Hell forge quests, if I will be lucky with runes from it. I might even try to buy torch it should help with resists.

Update number 3

Hey, some new info :slight_smile: I played another 8 hours 50 minutes

I started doing Kurast runs and occasionaly objects in firt ACT 4 map and this is what I found:

  • Mal, Ist, Gul, Ko, Lum, Hel, Hel, Io, Io and some lesser runes**
  • Tal Rasha Mask (used for my mercenary)
  • Peasant crown (probably no value anymore?)
  • Aldur Helm (probably no value anymore)
  • Trap skiller (it was hilarious as someone who was running superchests in Kurast just left it there. I will sell it for another Um

I also found Waterwalks with low roll in one Test Travincal run and dropped Ist from Hellforge Hell, on nightmare it dropped Ko. Quite good result honestly

I had some runes and plenty of games so I started trading some stuff:

  • Bought Shako for Mal and socketed it with Ptopaz
  • Bought Eth duriels shell for mercenary for Mal
  • Horizon Tornado for 6 PAmethysts
  • Sold Gul for Ist+Mal
  • Bought Barbrian Torch 19/13 for Mal
  • Bought Ravenfrost 222/19 Ravenfrost ring for Mal
  • Bought two spirit swords for Ko, Ko and some Pgems (i use them on W for find item with higher level and for shouts

I also did some Baalruns and finished at level 80. My current goal is to buy Thundergods Visor and make Grief.

Ok bad necro here but I wanted to ask a Horker Barb question since I have been experimenting a bit.

What would you say in your experience, is the ratio of GG items (runes, big time uniques, useful items) you find with the horking, vs just actual PVM?

I am trying to gauge the actual effectiveness of using the build vs a Paly for Trav/Kurast, ect, and whether having the hork is worth the investment. I havnt found enough yet, and Ill admit, no where near as many runs as you do LOL, to really convince me, yet…

Item find barb is so much better because item find has maximum loot without “nodrop”. So council member always drop 3 items. I can show you my barb, I can show it right now actualy by going live so you can see difference, i will do few runes without and with horking.

I will do 10 runs without item find and 10 runs with it so you can check difference. Just give me sec I need to change my equip.

It doesnt matter anymore i moved to other projects. And trading using sites to make deal is legit.

Not bad at all… Def more Rare’s than my runs, and tons of items with the 53%.
Fast enough to be efficient vs a hdin that mows them down, so no real speed loss there.
Probably the biggest thing I noticed was far more rejuvs from the council and surroundings with find item vs not.

Runes were a push I think, some with, some without.

Few more charms with!

You were thinking heavy on that level 30 16str ring though… lol, keeper earlier on for other builds, unless you have a few better low level options already.

Yeah definitely more items, you could see that some runs without hork was just few items on ground. Rejuvs werent from council tho, they were from elite mobs, vampires and heirophants.
