I’m sure I’m not the only one who has noticed this but if you whois the IP addresses of game servers, they’re hosted in AWS cloud. Noticed this when hunting dclone.
They use AWS for running real-time analytics and machine learning pipelines
Very few companies host their own games on their own servers anymore.
Much cheaper for them to “rent” datacenter servers so they can farm them out. Which means they’re paying in IP blocks for incoming/outgoing data access etc. Which also means that’s why they’re “incrementally” increasing server space depending on how many clients are accessing.
That way they can save money instead of overestimating the amount of client space needed to access games.
I’m no “fan” of AWS… but I do understand the offering they provide to companies who need such services. If people really think Blizzard has some sort of “server room” that’s accessible to public traffic, they’re really out of touch with how current technology works.
This explains a lot with regards to server capacity If you over engineer you pay too much, if you under spec the gamers experience the pain. This is driven buy cost management obviously
with no MRC and having to pay DIDO, I would imagine there is someone watching every penny spent lol…
They cannot scale game servers because an integral part of the back end does not support it and they failed to recreate it before launch
Indeed.
It’s what I’ve been trying to tell people all along whilst they’re complaining about the “devs” and netcode, these types of decisions don’t get made by the “hired help”, they get made in offices high above that- usually between Marketing and the CEO/Board then passed down to Production in order to conserve on costs well before release even occurs.
Strategic planning happens well before release. It’s pure ignorance to believe that a company just hits some sort of magical fire button. And it’s not “middle management” or the lower ladders of the structure that get to make all these decisions. Hell, most of them don’t even get to decide what their daily schedule is.
Still been a month since release with the same issues. Wtf are they doing up there
Irrelevant, I dont care who makes the decisions, i just know that whoever is making them is bad at their job. Been in queue for hour and half now.
It may be irrelevant for you… and that’s fine. But if you’re pointing fingers at the wrong people, then it has the same irrelevance in solving the problem you have.
It’s like getting a fist to the right side of your face and turning left to confront your attacker.
