I had a Superior Hunter’s Bow that I took to Larzuk to socket for me. Larzuk is supposed to give max sockets on white items isn’t he? According to the Arreat Summit, a Hunter’s Bow has a max of four sockets:

Larzuk only gave me three in it. He is supposed to give max sockets in white items isn’t he?
I don’t recall seeing 4os hunter bows, could be wrong though.
Tbh I usually just ignore them as it is never a favorable base to use for anything.
think hunters bow found in nm and hell can be 4 soc. It depends on the item level doesnt it? just like crystal swords, you need a cows or nm one for 4 soc.
If you take it to Larzuk, I thought it always does max sockets. Maybe it doesn’t.
normal difficulty except some A5 areas and cows drops are cap 3 sockets
normal cows are guaranteed 4 sockets…if you use Larzuk reward on an item found pre-act 5 you get 3 sockets max
Nightmare items drop 5 socket from A2 to A5 onward
6 sockets only drop from hell difficulty
for the exact precise info…look up ilvl and max sockets…or some search alike to that
depends on the ilvl
max of 4os at an ilvl above a certain point
Larzuk always give max sockets, it is just ilvl of some items from normal is not enough to get max sockets for item. EG crystal sword found in A1 Normal will get 3 sockets because that is maximum number of sockets it can get. Crystal sword found in A1 NM will get 4.
Edit: This is where recipe for turning broken items gets some use as ilvl of such item is always 1 (if I remember correctly) and it tricks Larzuk in adding lower number of sockets than maximum.
It does give the maximum that particular item can get based on that items ilvl, not just item type.
A Hunter’s Bow needs to be ilvl 26 or higher to be able to get 4 sockets from Larzuk.
That means that you need an area with level 26 or higher to drop it. In Normal that’s all of act 4 and Arreat Summit in act 5 and later, and then anywhere in NM or Hell difficulty. Keep in mind different items have different ilvl requirements for socket numbers so the above is not valid for all item types. Also note that no item regardless of ilvl can natively spawn >3 sockets in normal, but as stated Lazuk always gives you the maximum sockets that item type and ilvl can get.
Some monsters like champions and uniques have a bit higher level than the area level so it is possible get sufficient ilvl even lower than a lvl 26 area, but if you aren’t exactly sure what dropped it going by the area level is usually pretty safe.
These nuances are why many people wish they would add an optional feature to display an items ilvl as part of the tool tip, so you didn’t have to keep such good track of where you found it and what dropped it.
