Simply writing down the facts and then giving you a logical conclusion based on the facts.
I would love the feature to exist. Doesn’t hurt me if it’s there. But they said why they won’t do it. I’m no expert in security, they are. They made the decision that it was a vulnerability that they didn’t want to exist. Makes sense to me.
I’m trying to hold out, and give them some time to press things out before I jump ship.
The mod community is already reverse engineering everything.
If they don’t do a decent job of fixing things, I fear that they will just have a portion of potential players to fill the servers.
This thread title… lol.
I don’t think I’ve used TCP/IP to play a game since like '98-'99.
I guess I misconstrued what you said.
But an alternative could have been implemented certainly.
They blew smoke up our behinds up until Beta or so.
Feels bad man.
Yep, they did. They flip flopped.

Anybody miss horse and buggy travel yet? Sometimes my family and I just want to ride the wagon into town to pick up a bolt of cloth from Doc McGillicuddy’s Dry Goods and Sundries shop.

BnetD project was exploiting the bnet authentication software 20 years ago. The same exact standardized tcp/ip protocol that d2 uses to this very day (with the same vulnerable tcp/ip) was the same that was in D2R during beta and it has the same exploitable code its inherent in the tcp/ip protocol thats why places that use to use the IPX protocol places like Kalinet 30 years ago before publishers like blizzard, id software , bethesda and others that didnt include netcode in their games we were playing online. Oh and it can still be done with D2r.

Thank you for an educated response!
Most have nothing of value to add.
Do you have any recommendations on an alternative?
This post was meant to garner some discussion on things.
What about “Google QUIC”?
Depends on Blizzard they can either turn it back on or someone will it isn’t rocket science its all still there if its left to us a work around will have to be done like the above mentioned bnetd project method and blizzard got their undies in a wad. The only reason bnetd used to spoof the authentication method was to ensure game files matched so they could limit unauthorized game files while playing but theres better ways to matchmake today.

Yeah, some did during the Alpha phase.
I think that was another reason it was “removed” from the current release.
It’s just going to suck after everything gets scoped out, and the community falls off for real mod support, and custom servers.
Why wait on Blizz, when you can just do “xyz”.
Well, that’s life. Or so they say.
no, the TCP/IP protocols for local network or playing with your friends in private games not connected to battlenet had nothing to do with duping on the main bnet servers. there wasn’t any crossover between the TCP/IP saved game files and official bnet, none at all.

I miss TCP/IP or at least let us game with those on our network.

That’s because you are too casual or play only online with strangers. Some people try to reduce the ping to enable new forms of gameplay or play locally with friends.
The fact that you can’t afford a gamer laptop doesn’t mean others can’t.
Blizzard removed TCP/IP and LAN play because they wanted more control. If you want to play with others they force you to do so on the Blizzard servers. It was removed because they felt it was the easiest way for them to have total control.

I miss real game devs who knew how to make games, who were hired based on actual merit & not the boxes they tick.
Has anyone ever wondered why Blizzard can’t come up with anything original anymore, or anything good? they have to resort to re-releasing old games made by people they’ve never worked with? & then they destroy them?
That’s what happens when you hire the wrong people for the job, they may as well outsource blizzards work to the public sector, we’d see the exact same outcomes

“Casual”: I actually used to be pretty competitive.
“Can’t afford”: LOL… you have no idea.
Yeah, they really shot themselves in the foot by removing TCP/ip imo. It would have lessened the stress on the servers as some people would have been just fine playing over TCP/ip with their friends etc.

I think they were also addressing the tools that could be used to monitor the game data through TCP.
Anyone can do that with a good linux distro.
Please try to remove the TCP/IP protocol from your networks adapter and see how things will work out for you after. =)
It is a risk after all, better remove it!
The fact that people believe and re-itarate their nonsense is quite amazing!
