Another desperate call for a Loot Filter

As much as I love this game, nothing frustrates me more than the lack of a loot filter. It’s not just that it’s hard to see items on the ground, it’s that items do not appear at all. There is a limit to how many items can have their item text displayed on screen at once, which is 32. While this can apply to almost any area in the game with enough density/drops, two examples of very problematic moments are:

  • Lower Kurast, Players 7, Super Chests
  • The Pits, other level 85 areas, or terrorized zones, even on Players 1, and particularly with a Barb using Find Item (Horking) which is easy to get to 76%, i.e. 76% chance for double drops, or twice the item clutter.

In both cases, there can be far more than 32 items on the ground at once. There are basically two options.

  1. Accept this, and move on/start another run.
  2. Pick up/consume a bunch of life/mana/rejuv/stamina/thawing/antidote potions so you can finally see the items you actually care about.

Both options are ridiculous. For #2, if your inventory is already full of charms, such as MF charms, that’s barely even an option. How many high level items/runes have players missed out on, just because they didn’t know about this limit, or couldn’t be bothered with the tedious “solution”.

How would a loot filter work work? While there are already some great mods or mockups out there, it would essentially allow us to filter out any/all of the following:

  • Gold under a certain amount
  • Minor Healing Potion
  • Light Healing Potion
  • Normal Healing Potion
  • Greater Healing Potion
  • Super Healing Potion
  • Minor Mana Potion
  • Light Mana Potion
  • Normal Mana Potion
  • Greater Mana Potion
  • Super Mana Potion
  • Rejuvenation Potion
  • Full Rejuvenation Potion
  • Arrows
  • Bolts
  • Key
  • Scroll of Identify
  • Scroll of Town Portal
  • Chipped Gem/Skull
  • Flawed Gem/Skull
  • Normal Gem/Skull
  • Flawless Gem/Skull
  • Any Rune (at least low level ones, perhaps up to Fal or so)
  • Antidote Potion
  • Stamina Potion
  • Thawing Potion
  • Choking Gas Potion
  • Exploding Potion
  • Fulminating Potion
  • Oil Potion
  • Rancid Gas Potion
  • Strangling Gas Potion

To minimize the User Interface space, Gold, Mana Potions, Healing Potions, Gems, and Runes, could all be sliders. The ones that I’ve bolded at the start of the list are the important ones, which are usually the most common on the ground, and any looter filter should allow these to be hidden at a minimum.

Please, devs, I beg you, give us a loot filter for season 5 please. While I think this should be free, I would pay a lot of money for this, because the quality of life improvement is that substantial.

If they were to add an item filter, it would need to be simple to use… Basically idiot proof. So any complicated loot filters that require putting if/and/or statements in to filter out unwanted item variables are out of the question. Picking up and inspecting the item in the player inventory must remain part of the game.

Something as simple as the ability to hide health/mana potion item labels only under a certain potion level would be a huge help, as health/mana potions account for roughly 25% to 33% of all drops. There should also be an option to hide gold labels, as it’s fairly easy to see roughly how much gold is there by the size of the gold pile. That’s the other 25% to 33% of the total drops.

Bam, up to 50 to 66% of item label spam potentially removed, just from hiding potion and gold labels. The items themselves are still on the ground and can still be picked up by clicking on them directly, and autogold can vacuum up the gold automatically.

When playing a “kill box” character like a Blizzard Sorc, I get tired of having to pick up and quaff large quantities of health/mana potions just to see what else is in the pile.

They should enable a Hotkey that doesn’t show White items. The end.

Yeah it will chang the game, 2020202020

my list would be much smaller. but still helping.

like you still need regular juves / greater potions sometimes.

i pickup all gems for cubing.

scrolls? i like picking them up instead of going to a vendor all the time… but eh. to each their own !

The next patch should be add + more big options

I partially disagree with that statement.
I’d say we need two levels of loot filter. The easy to use very clear one, and the highly customizable one.
Do you really want to have to sift through hundreds of white items just to finally notice that one base you actually need and not miss it? Certainly not, that’s crazy.
I’m not saying the customizable version has to be extremely advanced. Simple information like :

  1. Item class
  2. Base type
  3. Rarity
  4. Quality
  5. Number of sockets
  6. Ethereal/Non ethereal
  7. ILvl

This would be sufficient for most needs, and not an unreasonable thing to ask for from a decent filter.
Again, there should be an easier option for people not willing to bother about complex filters, like the sliders suggested in the opening of the thread, but still a heavier option would do a lot for the community.

The easier option is just a simpler preset for a highly cutomizable filter

  • Loot filter options:
    • Off
    • On
    • Custom

when i started paying project diablo 2 for the first few seasons, and got introduced to proper loot filter…it was amazing! i was astounded on how much good loot im missing! that include mid and high runes! (some item drop, i just didnt realize were any good till the loot filter told me! lol)…

another thing is total freedom in fast runes (especially with massive aoe that kills mobs off screen)…you can just go, without worrying that you missed anything good

but anyways…if blizz cant or dont want to do it for some reason …just allow the other ppl, d2 fans to do it for free like in the basic d2

All of your own personal requirements, as well as everyone else’s personal requirements, are why we need options. Everyone can set it up exactly as they want it.

ya that’s what i’m saying. i’m just curious as to why you’d rather never pick up those things honestly. i find them useful.

but i’m a different kind of hoarder.

i hoard small juvies to make big juvies.

i hoard all gems for crafting / cube upping. and if i can decrease how many times i buy id / town portals it’s a good night. but who am i kidding, i haven’t signed on since day 3 of this season.

Which things? The things in my OP? Those are not a list of things I wouldn’t pick up. Those are a list of options to accommodate all players. Personally, I pick up all Gems & Runes, but I understand if other players think that’s inefficient. Not exclusively here writing my own personal wish list, but trying to represent things that the vast majority of players would like. Here’s a couple of screenshots someone else did as a mockup:

i would miss the option to filter every modifier and rarity for every base

inferior
[0,4] sockets
superior
ethereal
magic
rare
set
unique

i also gonna add the transcription of devs interview with Llama when they answered about lootfilter on the patch 2.4 interview

Rob:
So lootfilters actually has been talked about for a very very long time and one of the tricks was that like, if we do loot filters…if we did like pretty much the lowest of the low of like “just dont show anything below this level”, there are, even at high end play, there are times when you wanna see low end stuff.
The problem was like if we’re going to do something we problably wanna do it better than just “only show me this rarity”

Llama:
Yeah, i think having like some of the mods have where you can literally write kind of your own script of how it shows it

Rob:
Right, and we agree thats the right way to do loot filtering but that puts a much bigger body of work on doing it so it’s kind one of those “if we’re going to do it we want to do it right”, so right now thats not on the table today…but yeah you guys keep yelling about it

Llama:
So there you go chat, if you just keep yelling about it they will eventually consider it

As someone who tried PD2 and PoD of personally hated filters. They just remove one of the few meaningful interactions with the game, that being searching through loot. The monsters already offer zero challenge. At some point you might as well just play single player and edit in all the items you want.

one of the best things about loot filters is that they are completely optional

so whoever doesnt wanna use it bc of x reason can just do as he like

but filter users are going to have an advantage by using it on pubs

in MP there are much more relevant factors such as positioning, ping, use of joystick and fast fingers
so make no mistake, its not the lack of a loot filter that will make you fail to grab that ber

I also really beg blizzard to give us a loot filter. I usually play p1 only and i too got the max 32 loots per screen issue.

When i do cow level with sorc, i will tend to lure big groups with static field plus chain lightning them, i will need to gulp down potions to clear the screen…i cant believe we need to even show hp mp potions/thaw/antidote/attack potions, bolts/arrows and gold amount. Who pick them up beside low levels… (for gold, we are already auto picking, why we still need to show on screen!!!). I wondering how those p8 people play cow level…keep gulping potions?!

A temporary and simple solution for right now that blizzard could implementes via server side is to disable gold amounts being displayed. We dont need to know how much each pile of gold is worth. If you look at the throne room, gold piles can take up to 50% of the loot display real-estate!

“searching through loot” is not the main problem. It’s that the loot cannot be seen because of the 32 item limit. So we are potentially missing out on super valuable items/runes because of this, or we are forced to pick up all the potions to chug them, so there’s less items on the ground, and this is painful when our inventories are already full. The ONLY comprehensive solution is a customizable AND OPTIONAL loot filter.
