Remember the people in charge of remaking the game thought this current system was better than the one made in the 90’s.

Or they intentionally did it to push us further towards 3rd party communication methods so it will be less they have to deal with when it comes to this non-lucrative game. They might as well remove the game lobby chat, it would only be missed by the spamming vermin.

But they still made chat channels? The extra step wouldn’t have cost that much, and the use has no cost. That reasoning doesn’t make sense. Why not then just not have chat channels or in game communication at all? Force our hand, eliminate the bulk of the development cost.

It seems like they were planning on releasing the game without the lobby. People on Reddit had to voice their concern after the beta. I wouldn’t be surprised because the lobby was unfinished and lacking basic features.

I feel like that is what they did in SC2 and other various bnet 2.0 games. But if your goal is to not make one and focus elsewhere. Why not just say no or ignore them. It doesn’t matter what the consumer thinks at that point, they already paid for the game.

Also didn’t it at least exist in a crude form always? I’m not sure if that is accurate, but it did exist. And if it existed, something as simple as a lobby system should probably just be done right.

yeah I’m not 100% sure what the deal was with it, but I think they wanted to have a good relationship with the Diablo community at that point in time. They were collaborating a lot with Llama and Rhykker and everything was in good spirits.

Now it’s just a wasteland of broken promises and shattered dreams.

Well considering that at the time D2R was mostly just a marketing ploy to generate hype for D4 that makes sense. Don’t create waves until D4 is released and sold to all the suckers.

But I would need a refresher on how chat channels were on launch because I don’t recall how they were. But I do think this has been the standard for Blizzard since the release of bnet 2.0. They don’t understand the core functionality and superiority of how the old chat worked on bnet1.0. But to the degree that you’re going to make ANY sort of chat system in game, it is absolutely moronic to not have it be equal to or better than the previous version, because if you’re going to spend the time to make any old system, you might as well take an extra day and do it right. It isn’t that complex we’ve had that level of capability since the mIRC days lol.

Hmm, come to think of it it was 99% the same as it is now. They only added a few options such as right click to check leaderboard rank and the lame fire effect when you mute a player (bot).

Yeah it’s something that I’m still angry about today.

What’s funny is the devs from Dark and Darker took inspiration from Diablo 2 LOD and did what Blizzard was supposed to do with the lobby. You trade directly in the chat channels, there are categories and sub-categories and they work effectively. I’m just sick of these C-tier game devs that work at Blizzard.

That is what I thought. Someone said it was an afterthought, but they learned their lesson after the release of SC2. Even though those chat channels were garbage AF too. There are games even today that still take pieces of bnet1.0’s social / chat features, but they’re not even smart enough to copy their own work.

Lol I wrote what was above before you mentioned dark/darker. But yeah there are plenty of companies that know that is THE system at least in part to use. As for Blizz specifically with D2R they were c-tier devs on an indie studio budget. But SC2 it was planned incompetence same with the other games as well, and they had some actual talent there. But their goal is to rush out, flashy, new products as quickly as possible with no depth or character or complexity because honestly it is simply more profitable. Pretty graphics and newness win in the money making department. But that is a board/CEO/stockholder demand, and it won’t ever change. Suckers will keep buying that trash, and it will continually justify it.

Oh the pitfalls of a huge publicly traded company… They’ll do whatever to keep those shareholders happy and the CEO/board members pockets lined.
