I arrived at act 4. I can’t find a merc to hire here. Is there one elsewhere? I am looking for one that can use a pole style weapon or a thrasher.
The one you are looking for is the Act 2 mercenary. There is no dedicated Act 4 mercenary.

act 4 mercenary is the act 3 assassin
pretty sure an assassin does not use a pole-arm. I just need the pole arm one and never saw one that could. Max-roll also tells me to get one, but again does not say which act. These are merc’s.
I just looked at the merc for act 2 - all say spear or javelin type weapons - nothing else.
Try equipping a polearm on act 2 merc, see for yourself

as for Act 4 merc…it only unlock if you kill every bosses a million time each(basicly absurd number that no one could ever reach within 20 years gameplay :S)

ok. using the map thing that shows everything or what you have already visited… upper right hand corner only shows Greiz. And all of his guys only use javelan or spear class. There is nothing else showing as an npc.
Ok it does work. It would be really NICE if the description showed all the weapon types they can use!
