Friend of mine had his hellstone from a previous difficulty still and we cleared Hell Mephisto and he was unable to pick up his soulstone from mephisto so he just left it on the ground. When we came back later to do his hellforge it wont let him put the soulstone on the anvil to break with hammer like it did in the original game if im not mistaken. I dont think you need to actually have the soulstone to be able to get your forge from what i remember. Also killing hell meph will no longer drop his stone again.

Having the same issue with Nightmare Hellforge. My Cain is also bugged, and when I click on him, he just give the Hellforge quest dialog and the quest dialog after you kill Diablo – he won’t give the option to “Talk” or “Identify Items”.

I believe you are using the wrong mephisto stone.
Each stone belongs to its own difficulty. If the text is red, it’s the stone from another difficulty.
1- drop all your meph stones
2- go kill meph in the difficulty you want to do the hellforge
3- do the hellforge in this difficulty

Mephisto in normal doesn’t drop soulstone
Cain gives me but when I put on hellforge and have hammer just says “I CAN’T”
so frustrating…tried 8 times both normal and nightmare neither can do it

Have you followed the above steps? Is your meph stone text red? I’m not aware of another requirement for this quest to be triggered. Mephisto quest must be done, cain will give the stone if you didn’t get it from Meph, if you go to the hellforge in the same game then it should work.

mine still not working – I have done all of this multiple times over now and have made sure I don’t have any items from different difficulties – just “impossible” to smash the stone
I even went back into Normal, killed Mephisto again (no stone dropped) and then ran through to Cain, got him to give me a stone, then went to the forge again…same result. “impossible”

drop all soulstones then go to cain in act 4 on the difficulty you are trying to complete the quest on. He will give you the soulstone again.

I have a similar issue killed Meph on hell, he dropped the soul stone but it would not let me pick it up. I was playing solo and had no other soulstones on the character,now Cain just repeats the quest dialogue over and over but does not give me a stone. Starting new game gave same problem.

I’m in Hell with Lvl 79 Zon, but stuck on this quest. I have tried every permutation, starting with drop soulstone and begin new game.
-Kill Meph, no souldtone drop.
-Get GOLD soulstone from Cain, kill Hephasto, can’t pickup hammer
-Kill Hephasto, get GOLD soulstone from Cain, drop on atlat, can’t pickup hammer.
I’m at about 8-10 tries now. Basically Lvl 79 and I can’t complete game. Any help would be apprecaited!
Solution Found: Join an ACT IV game and complete the quest with them. Hellforge quest isn’t even needed.

had the same issue. your if your inventory is full cain won’t give you the soulstone. take one sc out and then it will work.
