This is my first time ever, using an Act 2 merc. Running NM right now. I chose Holy Freeze.
After resurrecting him for the first time, his aura just doesn’t turn on anymore. NO difficulty changes involved, yet.
No, it’s not just a visual bug as with the other reports I’ve seen around. It’s obvious the aura is not working at all, and it’s still the one on display in his stats.
Any ideas, anyone please? I was really getting to like the help he gives. Working on getting him properly equipped, and so. Something I hadn’t bothered with that much with mercs, in the past.
UPDATE: Reaching a different level/going back to town multiple times, wasn’t turning his aura back on. Restarting the game did, but that’s not an acceptable fix of course. Just a very lousy last resort.
They have a change to activate their aura with each hit they make. Sometimes if you clear everything before they get a chance to do something their aura won’t proc. You could go to act 1 and let them hit some fallens I guess.

Yeah. I didn’t figure that out because the 1st time it took a while. Now it seems to happen faster after reviving. Thanks!
What level is your merc? I think some auras don’t turn on until they hit some merc-specific level requirement. Not sure though
Lvl 60. I think all aura mercs are supposed to have their auras on right after you start with them. It’s never meant as something to come later.
But, as discussed above, it was just a matter of giving the merc enough time. After it faces and/or hits enemies a few times after reviving, it goes back on and stays on forever. It’s just that the very first time I revived him, it seemed to take longer.
The bigger issue with that right now, is that the “hit some enemies to turn back on” seems to require multiple enemies. So, definitely NOT take a just-revived aura merc to face a boss.
Happened to me with NM Duriel. Had to face an important portion of the fight, without merc’s aura. Because he had either died and I wasn’t gonna turn my back on Duriel to go for the portal, or because his aura wasn’t turning on.
In any case, I handled that boss quite well even without merc’s Holy Freeze. My build is clearly solid enough that merc aura is just a nice accessory. That and his melee damage of course, which I boost with Fanaticism.
I know for a fact a2 mercenaries in normal don’t start turning on auras until certain levels, I just don’t know how this scales up to nightmare and hell.
Ok, I didn’t know. Sorry. It’s a different situation anyway, as I got my merc recently in NM Act2’s beginnings and his aura worked right away. The “takes a bit of fighting” glitch, again, comes after reviving him.
I’m learning to enjoy an actually useful merc, for the first time. Before that, I just kept the A1 going and half-bothered to equip her right because I didn’t carethat much and she wasn’t dying that often. But in NM A1’s end and A2’s beginning, she was going down too often. So I bothered to learn some more, and found out about Holy Freeze mercs. I had considered having that aura myself, but the fact it’d force me to forsake other auras was unacceptable. So, having TWO auras in play, that complement each other by making me faster and enemies slower, is nice and fun.
