Accidental delete of character

Just had this happen to me. Late at night, tried to close the game after a couple of hours playing to go to sleep, and ended up deleting my only character. I’m used to the close button being on the right hand side of the screen that I hit this X and “ok” without thinking. As someone who doesn’t get much time to play; with work and home life, this will make you want to stop playing for a while.

Just happened to me. Wasn’t that far, but probably 6 hours down the drain. Shouldn’t be that easy to delete a character.

Is it really that hard to pay attention?

Also, if you want to exit the game, just press Esc.

It is not hard to pay attention. One time I accidentally clicked it and realized it was to delete, and I declined.

However, after playing for say many hours straight, the mind is fatigued and the fingers get used to clicking on things quickly.

Best be honest 95% of Diablo II is clicking on stuff as quickly as possible. To have a character delete take 2 clicks that can occur in .5 seconds is just absurd. By playing many hours you are mentally drained and the fingers preconditioned.

This absolutely is poor UI design. No excuses.

Literally it can involve talking to your wife as you try to exit game and see the x button - and you press it.

It’s a dumb design.

Nope. Why do you think the game exit button is among the character controls?

The main game controls, including the giant exit button, are all on the left hand side, while all the character related controls are on the right. There is absolutely no excuse for you to confuse this. Don’t blame Blizzard for your carelessness.

If you really are that careless, then you will have to suffer the consequences. I’m tired of companies trying to idiot-proof the UI just to keep people that can’t be bothered to pay attention from making mistakes.

Gee I wonder why Blizzard introduced this feature in WoW.

Your point would be more valid if there are not tons of other players facing the same issue described. Check here on this forum and on reddit.

Since when did good/better design become idiot-proofing? Do you turn off auto gold pickup or is that not an idiot proof feature as well? https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo2/comments/pua0df/anyone_else_accidentally_delete_their_character/

By implementing a harder to delete character process, what does that detract from the game for you? How does it make the game worse? What is the risk to reward?

lol timberwolf must have designed the interface

Funny enough, I eventually did turn off auto gold pickup.

My issue is that catering to the careless only encourages people to become even more careless. It takes only a moment to read the tooltip that pops up when you hover the mouse over the X. A few more seconds to read the dialog box that pops up. If you can’t be bothered to do that, then yes, you deserve to lose your character. Maybe that will teach you to be more careful in the future.

Holy F n s, wife just came home, hit level 16 was going to exit game, and hit the x, deleted character. If you are serious and there is no recovery, guess what else is getting deleted.

Here’s what I and everyone else should do, get this there is other things to do in life than play wow or diablo, so with that being said, when you make a restore character button for Diablo 2 resurrected I will think about reinstalling it. Maybe I will think about spending another dollar for activation blizzard.

Bummer, me too. Just too tired at the end of the day and “x” to close is too ingrained in my brain.

I would love to berate you to the point of getting banned.

Timerwolf, the “You’re dumb, it’s easy” comments are getting old. Go to another thread.

There should be a notification you’re deleting a character, it shouldn’t be a one off press - especially for something you can potentially put hundreds if not thousands of hours into.

You remind me of my brothers playing RPG’s where it defaults save file to the top, no reason to overwrite someone elses save file - but it happens. You aren’t everyone (and I get the feeling people right now are glad they aren’t you), and everyone interprets information differently.

I bet if you play long enough, you’d do it too - I’d laugh but karma would have made the point. D1, D2 and D3 all gave this option if you are sure you wanted to delete.

Just goes to show you how badly Blizzard has been slipping.

It is not hard… but when you work 10 hours 6 days a week., raising 2 kids 1 of which is a new born… and your wife asks you to take the kids because she needs a break then yeah accidents can happen. This is how I deleted my character. Just wanted to have half hour of fun and then I accidentally deleted my character because I was side tracked and exhausted. Plus I don’t really have much time on my hands so creating another character is just not really on my to do list now… Is it really not that hard to be understanding and not an anti social A hole to people?

Just did the same thing. X is universal for close window. It seems silly that deleting a character doesn’t require a little more of a hurdle like, you click the character first, then click a button that has the word “delete”. Absolutely lazy and stupid UI, and seems to be affecting many…and imagine all the people who this affected that don’t go on forums.

Did the same thing just now… I thought I was logging out and pressed Enter and my character disappeared…

Well I had a 79sorc with some laggy of the PC I mistakenly deleted it and did a lot of grinding and lost really good progress and 2 days of non stop playing.

This really needs to be brought to blizz attention even tho I don’t think they have time for this atm.

1 weekend for nothing .
